I use the nut method, except I drill thru the nut and bolt at the same time, then reuse the nut as a guide if I have multiple bolts.
This car is one of the original Mercury B/FX Comets

40 - 41 had the spare tire mount on the right side. Don't know if the 38 - 39 had the spare mount

I think I would support that flange well. and drive a taper pin punch in that hole from each side. You can probably reshape that hole to round.

Make sure you go 270 degree from the 180 degree mark not #1 TDC. Start TDC, then turn 1/2 rotation, then turn 3/4 rotation.

I'm thinking you have a 1958 332 fe in there. The casting numbers would be right and the 332 has a 3.30 stroke.
What are the casting numbers on the intake and the heads? The head numbers are on the center of the head between the spark plugs.
Looks like it's a KD puller, its definite a nice heavy duty unit.
