The Jalopy Journal
I have a hard time tossing/scrapping old parts. I'll probably save the axles for material, scrap the ring/pinion, save the housing /backing plates...
That kinda what I figured. No sense taking 1 step forward and 2 steps back.
Can I assume an 8 inch ford unit will pop in this housing without alot of trouble?
The car I spoke of in the 1st post was obviously a 56. I do remember it was pink and white, with the distinctive swooping trim on the doors.
Drums are now removed, see 1st post. I can measure backing plates tomorrow if you are interested. I doubt if I will be using it. Brad
So what is this model rearend called? It has a nice balanced look to it.
I pulled this from a junked out 57 Victoria sitting on it's roof. (very sad) I assumed it was a 9 inch, a friend looked at it and said no. He says...

I prefer Allen head fasteners. Working in a injection mold maintenance shop spoiled me. They are mechanic friendly as opposed to slotted screws...
I see what you are saying. I looked at the diagram. It has 2 pawls that clamp down on the bolts. Very nice.
Just found this at Summits store on flea bay. Appears to do the same job. Looks like it would make it much easier, especially if you are working...
Squirrel, that is an interesting tool. What did blue point call it?
I have no connection with this. Doesn't have a title. https://charlotte.craigslist.org/cto/5558063386.html
If you want LOW budget, you need to pick a vehicle that is in LOW demand. I found a 1930 Willys sedan on E-bay about 2 years ago. Got it for...
I rebuilt a 289 ford with a buddy in high school in about 77. Rebuilt it like you are doing here. Low budget, cleaning and scrubbing it down,...
My lathe is down so I went to a buddies shop. Put a small ceramic magnet on OD of chuck. Ran it at 600 rpm, tach reads 600. Good to go.
Looks like you took a steam cleaner to it. You are working pretty fast. Don't forget the inside passages on the rocker shaft. Sludge loves to...
Could you send me a link to the ad you saw? thanks, Brad.
This is older technology from the 60's I believe. I've done a search already, many older tachs operated this way.
Purchased an NOS tach on flea bay a while back. No paperwork with it. Has a sending unit with it and some brass screws and a steel wire? attached...
The gears in the Mercury case don't have visible pitting as far as I can tell. Only had gunk and light surface rust. The spare parts pile is hit...
Width is 3". The input shaft in the spare parts pile has 16 teeth. The shifter cover is from the case that has the break. [ATTACH] [ATTACH] [ATTACH]
I have a set of gears that came with the empty case. Maybe they are LZ also. I'm going to check my fork width.
Here is the empty case I just treated and washed down. Hope to transfer the good components over if they are fully compatible. [ATTACH] [ATTACH]...
Thanks Bruce. There is a little symbol at beginning and end. I was wondering about the linkage, too. Another extra tranny case I have has a short...
99A-16650, # of teeth is 16.
Just realized looking at some videos and pictures this isn't a Model A transmission. Not an early one anyway. I don't think they had...
Pulled tranny out again this AM. Hosed it down and scrubbed it a bit. Much better now. I think I can proceed with teardown without too much...
Pulled transmission out of tank.[ATTACH] [ATTACH] [ATTACH] Washed a bunch of goo and gunk out. Putting it back in and rearranging the anodes. Last...
It did ok. I think I used a medium setting on the charger, but I used tide for an additive and rebar for an anode. I took my time, wiped the goo...
