I had the same problem with my '35 Chevy pickup w/ 455 pontiac and munci. I bent the shifter arm forward until it cleared the seat and it works great.
Always Tighten before you loosen. Just enough to feel it move. Same goes for bleeder screws. Don't believe me try it. Works 90% on rusted exhaust...

Always tighten a bleeder screw just enough to feel it move before you loosen. Works every time.
I have a 35 chevy pickup. Disc in front ford drums out back no problems. With a heaver car you may have to push a little harder but they'll work.
I recently did the same thing, used a drill and hack saw, made baffles and put some foam in them. Then found out I had a broke piston causing oil...
