Just cut a piece of sheet metal to fit,there should be some bungs under the vc to bolt it to.
Check for a neutral safety circuit,a lot of the wiring companies put them in.

You could have warped the thermostat with the cold water. For what it costs go buy a new one.

google 3m roloc. they are sanding discs ,2" and 3" quick change and they last pretty good.
I use them all the time on aluminum.They work great for gasket removal. I would use a standard roloc 36 or 80 grit for paint removal on steel.

I had them in my chevelle,the front end was at least 3" lower.They help in the transfer of weight ,like stated above. my car lifted super quick...
the spacers will actually lower the frontend.
