I wouldn't see why putting an active crossover in the signal path wouldn't work, it's the same concept as a Head Unit. I will need to check out...

For a rear step: maybe a flip up one, kinda like a flip up (or flip around) headlight so it wont disturb the lines. (?)

Something to compare size with would be an additional help. Size of the object in question, that is.
Tried it, hated it. You can put on as many layers as you like and be warm and comfy, but you can take off everything and still be uncomfortable....
