I've been away from Fords for a while, so my memory is a little fuzzy, but I think maybe your valve covers should be Ford Corporate Blue...not gold.

Black oil usually means gasoline in the oil from running rich. Is it thin and smells like gas? Try lighting the dipstick with a match or lighter...
If it's anywhere near as nice as the picture makes it look, I'd just drive and enjoy it. Looks like a beautiful ride to me!

How often are you going to drive it? If you drive it a lot, then fuel mileage becomes more important.....but that 390 would sure be cool.
It's barely a drive for you but, Ron's Coachworks in San Angelo is really good...and has done several 32's. He's a hotrodder himself and is easy...
