This is an Olds 324 engine hooked to a 40's Ford era side shift 3 speed tranny. The Olds engine is adapted to the Ford with an Offenhauser adapter...

I have seen backing plates opened up like that for racing, but as you say these look to be factory made. I've never seen any like this before.
