thanks for your help, guys. I did take the coward way out and eliminated the original switch & added an aftermarket one. everything works fine...
think I'm gonna take the coward way out & just bypass the column switch & install a good old universal switch like I did on my 53 Plymouth wagon....

yep, problem seems to be that pesky switch, and new ones are 180.00. yikes!

haven't switched cabs yet, but my 40 ford coe is going on an Isuzu 4 cylinder diesel box truck frame...(as soon as I get caught up...yeah).
40 grille is oval also, with just a few trim differences from the 39. (I think)
