<hr style="color:#e5e5e5; background-color:#e5e5e5" size="1"> Does anyone have any suggestion on what the clearance should be between the motor DAMPER wheel and the STEERING DRAG LINK. How much will a reverse eye front leaf spring drop when fully collapsed?? Thank you in advance.................... LG, Mike
It may be the picture, but that engine looks low. I'd put the pan rail level with the top of the frame at least.
"it is what it is"...........how many inches off the ground would you consider minimum adequate. My measurements are far from final. At the moment, the front of the oil pan is 5" off the ground.
My question may have been answered by DYNODANNY.............below is more info- I need to know, or an intelligent guess, as to how much of a drop my front 29 1/4" reverse eye leaf spring would have fully collapsed?? The shackles are 1 1/2" center to center. Thanks, Mike
Hi DYNODANNY.................... I see that you have the SAME PROBLEM with your motor that I'm tackling right now. Have you had any problems with the UPWARD PITCH in the front. ¿How many degrees do you have at the carb base? and are you leveling your carburetor pad? Thanks for your input, Mike
I had a little clearence issue with mine, I had only about 1 & 1/2 inches at ride hieght, so I switched from a stock 8" balancer to a 6", picked up another inch of clearence. I'm running a SBC also with a 4" dropped Super Bell and a Posies reversed eye spring with the short leaf removed. The frame is notched and I never hit the stops. Just make sure you set the stops, or bumpers or whatever you want to call em so they hit before the drag link gets to the balancer, if that makes sense.
First of all, I like to compliment you on choice of year.....1966 is the year I graduated H.S. I just measured my damper.....it is 6" and the pulley is 6 3/4". I have a Magnum 4" drop axle with a 29" reverse eye spring. My frame is also notched. So it sounds like we pretty much have a similar situation. Do you have a drag link or rack-n-pinion link running under the damper?? If so, HOW MUCH clearance did you allow?? I will have to research the STOP.........GOOD safety item for sure! Thanks a bunch for all the great info..............
I just measured and I've got about 2&1/2 inches at final ride hieght. I'm useing a Vega box with a drag link, I have a 6" dampner and a 6" crank pully. I'll load a pic if I've got one. I also graduated High school in 66. We built a new school and I was in the first graduating class at the new school that also attended the old school, hence the oldschool66. I guess it only makes sense to me. Good luck with the project, PM me if you have any other questions and I'll try to help out if I can.
Hi Don, Did you put the STOPPER under the FRONT cross member so it would hit the dropped axle?? If not, can you furnish a picture of how you did it. I solved the clearance problem but would still like to install a STOPPER for safety reasons and peace of mind. Thanks a bunch, Mike
I'll look and see if I have a pic of that. I can't get under it to get a decent pic now with the fenders on, at least I don't think I can. Well I found one of the frame notch, but before I put the stop on. The stop is just a rubber snubber that fits in the middle of the top of the notch, and hits the spring if it goes to far, which it never has. The snubber is about 3/4 " tall and It's never hit so I may just take it out. I set it up so that with the spring touching the top of the notch I still had about 1/2 " clearence between the drag link and the balancer. Everything on these Model As is really tight as far as clearence goes. I can't even fit my foot between the steering column and the kick panel.
