Hey everyone, I have a 1.12 4100 four barrelCarburetor from a 1959 T-Bird I am trying to get to work on my 1959 Edsel's 292 Y-Block that currently has a 2100 two barrel carburetor. I put the carb on tonight, here's how it went.

I got new primary jets (48 and 49 to test), and I put the 48s in the carb. I didn't touch the secondary jets, they are at 62. I made sure the floats were set at the correct level, which it appeared they were. (They are original and I didn't need to adjust or replace them.) I took my old 2100 off, put the 2 barrel to 4 barrel adapter on and bolted the carb down with all new gaskets. Primed it, fired her up and all I got was this:

The engine would immediately rev up to about 2600 rpm and then rev back down and stall. Any suggestions on what has gone wrong?

Haha, yes, I know. I'm doing the adapter thing because I want to see how much I like the carb on there before I buy / clean / and install a whole new manifold. The manifold I have on there now is NOS and was just put on like 6 months ago.

Two barrel to Four barrel adapters create problems think of it as a funnel, and the "B" intakes are getting pricey but worth it in the long run, next best choice is the "A" intake with a four barrel to late four barrel adapter which will still mate up to your 292's ports.

Sounds like a major vacuum leak. If you pump the pedal a few times before starting, it makes a puddle of fuel in the manifold. The air leak byp***es the throttle blades, so it revs up until the fuel puddle is gone, then shuts off.

Make sure the adapter matches the carb base and manifold, and that it is pefectly flat. Often they leave gaps that expose p***ages on the bottom of the carb base plate. Also make sure you didn't leave any vacuum hose barbs open on the new carb.

^^^This^^^. And check the carb base and adapter gaskets too. Might be a mismatch leaving a p***age for a vacuum leak.

Make sure the central portion of the base plate from edge to edge has sufficient seal. Look at all of those areas open to manifold vacuum! Might just want to go ahead with the manifold swap. If the 4100 does not work out you can easily swap to an Ebrock 500 or a Holley 390.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I removed the carb this morning and it appears you're all 100% right. That adapter has more holes than swiss cheese. It looks like its not allowing sufficient seal of the gasket and it's leaking past those areas. So…either a much more suited adapter is in order (is there one?) or a manifold. Anyone got a B manifold that's still good?
