It's getting ready to rain in Houston and the mind wanders, as mine does when a day of driving is called off. So, a quick check of my email finds a letter from a childhood friend, who I grew up with. He's into cars, but his taste are foreign vehicles. He grew up with muscle cars like I did, but being a successful and well paid computer programmer, his taste in things automotive switched with his income bracket. Well, we had chatted about the great car racing films and our lists were fairly close, considering the gap in our automotive tastes. So today I get a link and a note. "Watch this and turn up the volume." The first thing to throw me off was the ***le. I'd never heard of it, but a quick Google search yielded this bit of information: "1:42.08 (alternatively known as 1:42.08: A Man and His Car or 1:42.08: To Qualify) is George Lucas's senior project at the University of Southern California in 1966. It was named for the lap time of the Lotus 23 race car that was the subject of the film. It is a nonstory visual tone poem depicting the imagery of a car going at full speed, and featuring the car's engine as the primary sound element. Shot on 16mm color film with a 14 man student crew, it was filmed at Willow Springs Raceway, north of Los Angeles, CA.[1] The Lotus 23 was driven by Pete Brock." So this unknown film is by one of my favorite post WWII directors, has a *****in'car and the car is driven by one of the best drivers to ever hold a steering wheel. I watched and enjoyed. If you click on the link, do as my friend suggested. Turn your freakin' volume sky high and warn the children. THIS really is a sweet sounding automobile. The car is NOT a traditional hot rod or custom, but WTF, man.... it's PETE BROCK.
Thanks for posting this Fred,it may not be a traditional hot rod but it sure is a great video and the sound,,there has to be something wrong with a guy that doesn't love the sound. I really liked seeing the smoke come off the tires sliding through the curves. HRP
I stumbled across that video a couple years ago, it is very good. I wonder what grade George got for it in cl***.
Great video, love the sound of that Lotus as it clears its "throat'' and the RPMs build. Great footage Willow Springs! KK
Indeed well worth the effort of watching LOUD!! I had never seen that before, thanks Fred its like music for a rev-head!! Doc.
