Hi. I know how to find the gear ratio by spinnin' the ds etc. but is there a number stamped on the rearend, (if so where?) or a vin# code to show the rearend ratio on a '64 chevyII/NOVA? thanks guys. TP
There is supposed to be a code stamped in one of the axle tubes, but most of the time (here in corrosion country, anyway), it's illegeable after 40+ years. Just pull the rear cover and divide the large number stamped on the gear by the small number. It needs new lube anyway.
Like Heathen said: Pop off the diff cover and rotate the ring gear untill you see a number stamped on it's side. I believe it's the last 4 digits in the number. "xx4418" something similar to that. Take 44 and divide by 18 and you get 2.44.

I'm confused, did a 64 nova have a rearend with a cover, or with a drop out pumpkin? I would just jack up a rear wheel, put a stand under it, turn the wheel exactly two turns, and count how many times the pinion gear (driveshaft) turns. That's the ratio.
Any of the '64s I've seen had the more modern 10 bolt rear. '62-'63 Novas had the narrow version of the '55-'64 style rear.
