Replace that pilot bearing! (if it's still even in there)

Had a customer with a '52 Chevy that broke 2 clutch discs in a row! He kept going back to "his mechanic". Third one didn't disengage right, engine vibrated sometimes...I asked if he'd let me tear into it...he said O.K., but he was gonna sell the black beauty if it "couldn't be fixed"...
I removed the trans & clutch, there was No pilot bushing (brg) to be found...Installed a new brg., car was smooth shifting with no vibration. (duhhh)

  3. Nice F1 with a flatty!!! I dig the chrome reverse & WWW's too!

It's good to be on the road again I'm sure.

  6. Damn Kevin what a cool way to pic up chicks.

That's not what you were doing was it?

Q:Why on earth did you call for a streatcher, I got a chain bro. I would have pulled you home in a New York minute ( I was going to say "heartbeat" but that would just be wrong), I'm pretty much always available.

Ya gonna be able to sort it out, anything you need extra hand on the wrench or obsolete parts from the 'bean stash? I never give it all away you know I always have a spare something or other that I will never use.

Uh never mind looks like you got it fixed.

Get any helpful advice from your support team? Or at least get to bum a smoke?

  8. been there done that in the Northern Indiana countryside...pre cell phones on nonsensical poorly marked county roads...my Dad, after I finally found a house with somebody home who would let me use their phone, came and towed me home with his super powerful Chevy Luv pickup (of course prior to pouring funds into my disabled car I had to buy him a new clutch)

Yeah, there was no rolling anywhere. Things were so wadded up inside... I even did some added damage to the front retainer just dragging it onto the rollback. Also figure I need to make my insurance company earn their keep now and then.

My work schedule is kind of a double edged sword right now. Working a lot of hours but it's kind of at my discretion, so I could work from home while the truck was down. But how exactly do you reassemble an F1 while pulling down 60 hours a week? You don't get much sleep and you definitely don't do it alone.

So great to know someone else in midtown working on pretty much the same terms and schedule. And Mike (cactus1) is that guy. No doubt I'd still be mid-fix without the help. Adjustable lift plate? "Have one if you need it." Second pair of hands while getting the engine out and eventually back in? "I'll hop in the truck and be over in a few." And the biggest one: Digging though my stash on a Sunday to find I have every flywheel and pressure plate/disc combination but the correct one. "Covered... you owe me. :)"

Stoked to have new exhaust on there too. Fresh headers from Jay (Nosurf) and straight pipes all the way out the back. That was part of a marathon session starting Tuesday morning and ending Wednesday night around 10:00. Forty straight hours of designing for work and/or building exhaust with zero sleep. That may have been the first time I've watched the sun rise from my shop.

So thanks again to Mike and thanks everyone else for the offers. The truck is running better than ever.

This was from my first morning back on the road.

Cliche shift knob, morning coffee, leaky windshield, and no complaints.
