I was doing somewhere around 108 when a sow ran out in the road and became pink mist. The impact with the pig sent me squeeling sideways when all four tires blew. The speed caused the rubber to desinagrate and left me sliding down the road on my frame. It ground every thing down into a big long skid mark and the only thing that they found was my head. All they could say was he should of set his scrubline.Really,no really;)

I've had my F-1 up to 115-120 and it was all over two lanes (No one was around).

8. I had my 394 powered '63 Super 88 to 118mph (+/- 5mph old speedo) on highway 99. That was topped out, valves floating, bruised heel on the go pedal. That thing was a white knuckle ride from 80-90mph, but settled back down 'round the century mark. just don't try to turn.

Not as impressive but just as nerve-racking was topping my 60 f-100 out(before chassis/engine upgrades) playing cat and mouse on the same freeway. Only 85mph or so, but that's as close as I have come to grenading an engine, and quite a wild ride with worn bias tires and loosey I-beam.

9. That is Awesome!! I would love to take my little roadster around the speedway here in Indy.

Ive been 100 in the A a couple of times, and 120 in the 61 olds on a daily basis. the 61 buick had a kieth black small block in it. We averaged 110 from sandiego to reno in it. man that thing rode like a magic carpet. In highschool a friend and myself averaged 120,with speeds well over 135 running the Alcan highway from Alaska to portland. in a 69 mach. it felt like we were madmax or something. By the way that trip ended with a broken back and a totaled mach 1.

I have a ticket for going 123 in a 70 zone in my 64 Riviera, I was acting kinda proud and the cop was getting pissed at me..it was on the lonely Aransas Bay causeway, no traffic, new tires..I doubt if its accurate, but I've buried the 140 speedo in the Riviera, 30 over 425 with Kenne-Bell internals and big Holley.those cars will pull from 50 to 120 like nothing I've ever been in..the 53 Studebaker and 59 Edsel will both easily top 100..

135 along the Al-Can???? Must have been fairly recently.....that road is shit.....frost heaves and used to be 100's of miles of dirt........that explains the bad back/totaled Mach I.....

I did it in this one. It had a 429 cobra jet with a C6 and 8" rear. Would have gone much faster, but that was fast enough for me!

this thread reminds me of a story...

Back in the 70's, I drove a '64-ford-falcon-futura-hardtop-hand-painted-silver-with-a-brush. it was this time of year - we were heading up I-75 to get all stupid drunk for St Patty's Day.

the FFFHHPSWAB (see description, above) had a 170 six and fordomatic; 80 MPH was pretty much it. We'd managed to run about an hour or so flat out when we blew past a blue early 60's longroof chevy - somewhere between Flint and Saginaw. Guy and a girl in the front seat.

Moments after the flyby, the longroof is right on our tail. Keep in mind it's about 7:00 AM, the sun is just coming up, and there's no one on the road - and I've just picked up a tailgater while running WFO. the wagon ran close enough to actually allow the FFFHHPSWAB to pick up a few mph...

We ran this way for about 8-10 miles - clear blue sky, dry pavement, empty roads. then - outta nowhere, the longroof starts to shimmy a little bit. The driver of the wagon pulls out the throttle real abruptly, and the shimmy shifts to the ass-end. What started as a vibration rapidly became a tank-slappin' death wobble; the chevy went full sideways at freeway speeds, then spun. I figure the cheap-assed skinny tires were the only things that kept the car from going greasy side up; it stopped in the center of the road.

Never say the wagon the rest of the trip - never lifted, either.

gravel at speed is surfing on marbles - you're not drivin', you're spending most of yer time keeping the ass end behind the front end, with occasional course corrections to stay between the ditches. you can break suspension parts and not really notice, the concentration on stayin' alive is that great...

You guys crack me up!

Unfortunately not in a pre 64 but at the time GM was the biggest shareholder in Fiat so hopefully you will not be too unkind!
<O:p
Down in Italy with my business partner trying to close two big contracts before our year-end. As we were both a lot younger (read stupid) in those days we though that we could do both deals in one day, fly into Milan Italy for a 9am start, then catch the plane to Lyon France for a 3pm meeting and then get home in time for last orders at the bar.
<O:p
Plan was going really well until the Italians decided that they would like to take us to the local café bar to cement the deal in the time honoured manner. We managed to extricate ourselves from the clutches of our Italian hosts by Midday by which time there was absolutely no chance of us getting the plane to Lyon in time for our 3pm.
<O:p
Not a problem you might think, just reschedule the meeting and continue to enjoy the hospitality of our Italian brothers.
<O:p
Remember the bit I mentioned earlier of being stupid and it being our year-end? Good, the only thing I didn’t mention was that our year-end was the next day. OK, not the end of the world.
<O:p
Only problem was that we had sold our company and had ‘intimated’ to the buyer that the two deals were done……
<O:p
So, that is how the pair of us ended up on the E70 grunting like Neanderthals willing our Diesel Fiat on to greater and greater speeds as we tried to cover 450Km in 3 hours as opposed to 6…
<O:p
We spent more time looking at the speed as it slowly crept further and further around the clock, each 1Km increment greeted with a grunt of pleasure, people we passed must have though we were escapees from the local asylum as we were jumping up and down with excitement as we reached the heady heights of 200Km/h
<O:p
By folding the mirrors flat and closing all the air vents we finally managed to squeeze 215Km/h out of our the old donkey
<O:p
Did we make the meeting? No. We got stopped for speeding by Le Flic and fined a couple of hundred Euros, which we accepted, what we could not accept was the loss of time.
<O:p
We finally made it to Lyon just after 5pm having arranged to meet our client for an early supper and signed the deal; He thought that we were ‘Mad English’
<O:p
The lady at the Avis desk called us something much less polite when we handed in the keys to their brand new hire car; 450Km/h from where it should have been and with a rather suspicious knocking noise from the engine, which we swore, was there when we picked it up.
<O:p
Lots of other speed stories, like what happens when you are travelling at 200mph+ and your best friend passes gas and decides to wind the window down to release the fumes….
<O:p
Making Richard Attwood (multiple winner of Le Mans and a top guy) suggest that his time was not up yet….
<O:p
And many more.
<O:p
Great thread, thanks for reading.

Yes a 28 sedan 3 inch chop 348 tripower 3.55 gears 28 inch tall tires pinned till she had no more to give no problems at all. Speedo is broke but she was definatly over the century mark. oh ya shes fenderless and only 4 inch road clearance. The engine pushes about 300 hp maybe bit more. She just sat down and zoom zoom just a big gokart. John

138mph in the 34 Plymouth with 355 sbc and 3.08gears , 147mph in my 56 Chevy, 327 with 3.37 gears and about 105 in my stock 62 Impala with 2bbl 283 and ´glide.I have to admit it tool quite a while to get the Impala to 105...Over here on the Autobahn it´s good to have lots of power at higher rpm and numerical low gears, large tires help too.

112 in an Alfa Romeo Spyder ( I know it's not a hot rod) coming off an interstate ramp onto another major road.

It was in a partial covered road, at night, with the top down. It was cool as hell.

Hope my roadster '28 will break 100

29. Been over a hunert in my 40 and I even have a pic of my old speedo showing it, but that pic is buried in a box somewhere so instead here's a pic of me doing 90+ on turn 4 @ Charlotte. I've been on the track @ Indy too, but they kept us under 50 there...

30. I had a steel '26 roadster PU a few years back and had it up 112 on the Interstate. There were no other cars around at the time. Michael
