So you bought it yourself, right? Lol Dad's in his 80's. He says a lifetime warranty on things means less these days!
I'm jealous. Not about the Chevy, you understand, but running into Himself at a swap meet. What a day, huh?
Johnny I was a fairly regular (outdoor) vendor at the Portland Swap Meet starting in the mid seventies. I don't recall the year exactly, thinking the early 2000's, I'm sitting there resting from the typical barrage of dumb questions and rude offers, I wasn't focussing on anything in particular, just kind of staring off into the distance when a familiar face came into view, not a face I had ever seen in person but one that had long been etched in my memory from having my nose in car magazines since a teenager. Guess who it was, it was Isky, I knew it even though he was walking away from me, still looking larger than life as he always seemed to me. I told my pal to watch the space and decided to go shake Eds' hand except I lost my nerve, knowing he probably gets plenty of attention and just wants to be left alone. I did get close enough to see what he was carrying, a handful of what appeared to be Model T/A era wrenches, just seemed so unexpected but I imagine he wasn't there looking for small block Chevy parts.
No, I’m pulling everyone’s leg. I had taken pics of the car before Ed came walking down the aisle toward us. Thinking quickly, I snapped that shot of him from 3 spaces away and told myself, you got a hook now to post the car with. I did say hello to him as he came directly in front of Carina and I. Carina alway’s gives him a hug and he alway’s replies “what’s your name? nice to meet you”.
Wow! Thank you for sharing that with us. Typically on Friday mornings, wife and I go out for breakfast and most every time there is a 101 YO WWII vet there. Though a couple of women arrange to get him there, he walks in under his own power and can engage you in almost any subject. He was recently celebrated as the “Veteran of the Game” at a NY Mets game. Great guy to mix it up with. Thank you again for sharing your photos.
It's cool that he was WALKING the swap meet......unlike the Pate swap meet where you're likely to see (and have to look out for) a lot of people in their 20's riding around on rental scooters. Lynn
I got to meet Ed Iskenderian and Ohio George Montgomery in the tower at the 2018 Meltdown Drags. Was the first driver that year to cut a perfect light, so they told me go up to the tower to get a gift certificate donated by Competiton Products. It was hot that day and Ed and George were hanging out up there most likely to stay cool They both congratulated me and shook my hand, very cool experience, noticed Ed still had a cigar in his pocket
A few of us in The Tin Butchers Car Club met him at the 2018 Meltdown Drags, too. Our club ran the swap meet at The Meltdown, so we had our club tent set up in the swap meet area. We were hanging out at the tent, when Isky walked up and asked if he could use some of the shade. Of course, we said yes and offered him a chair. He even autographed Sam's, (rusty1 here on The Hamb), lawn chair.
Does anyone know why "Isky" always wears the glove on his left hand? I saw a You Tube video interview of him and he wore a black glove during that interview. I dunno, maybe it's protected info by the HIPPA law and none of my business! 60 Special
Got to meet Isky and Bones at the Meltdown Drag's. 2 of the most genuine down to earth people a person could ever want to meet! And yes, Isky's cigar was present!
Hello, Living well, watching what we eat, exercise and keeping the body active, all point to less stress on any old body. Sometimes, doing 3 out of the 4 starts a slight decline due to injuries or strain on the old body. as one aspect starts the healing process, it could take a while to get things back to normal or fairly normal. I injured my left knee in 1966 playing in an all star final event for a rubgy club in Belmont shore. As a young 20 something, I recuperated quickly during our last year of college. But, that was then and this is now. Over the years, I had reinjured the same knee and it took longer each time something happened. Whether it was the ligament out of shape, or just a bruise to the joint, it could not have been a cartilage, as it has been removed. So, any injury since is accepted as … it takes a long time to heal. I am envious of anyone who is older and is active in their lives. Their history may not have been mine, but they are still around even at 22 years older than me. It will be a wonder to be around at 100. Ha! The oldest in our extended family history line is/was 98. My direct family line was my mom at 80. Such comparisons make me dizzy. Jnaki The original concept for the first Lion’s Dragstrip Museum Grand Opening was a gathering of the old racers from the time period that would like to see a little history of So Cal drag racing. It was a 62 year reunion of sorts. Folks that were around back then were obviously older (me starting from 1957 to 2017 was 60 years to that point in time…) The folks I met and those that I remember that were still around was amazing. We all had one thing in common, we attended Lion’s Dragstrip, were part of the racers, builders and manufacturers still in the business or connected in some way. Some still local in So Cal and others from far away, but their memories were sitting in the stands or working in the pits absorbing the whole drag racing scene. The array of old hot rods, cool restored drag race cars were pretty amazing. Some had a total makeover, while others were just a clean rag, different cleaners and a elbow grease to make it come back to life, again. I was fortunate to be a part of the whole initial event with my long version of the color drag racing films from 1958 to 1964. The whole gathering was for the local racers who participated into the wee hours of the night at Lion’s Dragstrip every weekend during the early days. A surprise at the end… Isky does/has not aged that much since then. Good living, good friends and a good attitude toward life, with all of the history locked in place since those early days of a cool black roadster cruising around in So Cal.
