Has anyone had experience with the F1 steering replacement worm and shaft to know the difference? CPP has it for $129 and Van Pelt has it for $265 Others have it for more. Want to know if higher price is better quality. Has anyone used the $129 shaft with no problems?
I'm not sure how CPP is selling those so cheap. They are the same shaft and worm that everyone else sells for double the price. They all come from CHS Steering Components in Argentina and are high quality replacments. Maybe they bought a container load or something to get the price down or they are still working off of pre-pandemic inventory.
Cl***ic Performance Products in Placentia, CA. About equal amount of horror stories and good reviews.
In the past I have replaced just the worm gear, instead of the entire shaft/gear unit. Was much cheaper, and not real difficult. Dunno if you can still buy the worm gear any more though?
Van Pelt still sells the worm gear. I heat it up with an induction heater and pop it off with a gear puller using a big washer on top of the gear to have something to grab on to and then heat the new gear and tap back on. The length makes it a challenge to use in most presses.
I bought a worm only from a Ford truck parts co. in Calif. 4 years ago. Not CJ, but they were located in the central coastal region, around San Luis Obisbo as I recall. Worm was around $50. Easy press operation, used a 'C' type puller to press old one off; Cherry picker lifted my 20 ton press 3 ft. off the floor to get vertical clearance for mast shaft! Made my wife laugh.
^^^^ Good thinking on that induction heater, @AZ_Nick. (open flame torch could affect worm hardness!) Was unaware of Van Pelt selling worm only...
Somewhere on here; Neal posted a how-to on removing and installing a worm gear. There are also posts on the Ford Barn about the same.
The old gear comes off in 2 minutes using a thin cutoff wheel. Heat the new gear up in the oven and press back on, or use one of the methods described above.
