IIRC, the reason for cutting the car into 2 pieces, is that by law in most states they can sell you parts, but not a complete car.
sounds like your neighbor either needs a flaming bag of dog poop on their door step, some tp on their house and trees, or all of the above!
local pick a parts and junkyards have been setting up car like that on the welded wheels for many, many years, sometimes you see wierdo rare wheels welded up and sometime cragars. That Stude had detachable fins and the gravel pan still on it!! FYI at the LKQ pick a parts, they have about 20-30% increase on "vintage vehicle" prices and also force you to buy the guarantee because its premium items (like your gonna bring it back). so its another added 10-20 bucks per part. Some guys dont ask the prices before they put the work into pull them.
Nothing half that cool apart from a couple of mid 60s Ford sedans and an AMC wagon. Being from Michigan usually anything that old in the junkyard has either been picked over, and/or half rotted. Even those are far and few inbetween. Looking at some of these cars you could make a killing selling them in the rustbelt.
IIRC, it's an additional 30% mark up from the price list for any parts coming out of the "Primo" yard here in San Diego. That separate yard is where they drop all the very old, very new, luxury, specialty, 4WD, etc. Basically anything really clean or good goes in there. LKQ also charges a 'refundable core charge' on most parts. For example $10 for a hood core. It's just a way to boost prices as nobody is going to haul a wrecked hood back there for $10... Add 7.75% sales tax. Still a good deal though and always fun to roam around checking things out. I always see a few heartbreakers there where I find myself saying, THAT car doesn't deserve this fate...
"Gonna fix it up someday!" "Nobody is going to tell me what to do with my collection!" "Nothing is for sale!" If you hear any aged person saying these words, this is the most likely end result. Buy hey, y'all keep hoarding!
I will. Owning all my old stuff makes me happy, and as long as it does, I will continue to own it. Whether that makes you happy or not is of no consequence......
I don't think I've ever paid a core at LKQ except for one thing but then I think I weaseled my way out of it because I had nothing to return. I will give LKQ this is you go to their site look up what you want and they have pics of the entire car. ...Speaking of which there are two 66 T-Birds in the Fort Wayne LKQ with nice interiors.
Smells bad at the yard with LOTS of flies. Found out it's next to a dead animal processing place......
I neeeeeeeed those fins and the front splash pan off that Stude if it's still there and someone was willing to get them off and ship them to me..... for reals......
I'm happy that stuff is getting saved, especially in a yard that probably won't keep those vehicles around very long (maybe? Not sure). Way better they made it into the hands of someone who will use them, or resell them to someone who can use them instead of going to waste/scrap.
No one said it had to be 2 equal parts. Cut a piece off the bottom of a fender and the vehicle is technically 2 pieces.
Looks like a Stude V8, too. Neat old mags, although the steel outer bands and aluminum center style like that seems not to be very popular, and those look like they might be 14" as well, otherwise I'd expect them to be gone already. Definitely some good stuff left on that one. Around here, that'd probably be for sale as a project yet.
Just the stock transmission, the same one used until 1954 which was also the last year of a closed drive shaft in a Chevrolet. 1955 was the first open drive shaft Chevrolet.
I tried to alert the locals on the Studebaker board to a 64 Cruiser I found in the Fresno Pick n pull. The Thank you I got because I failed to organize, inventory and deliver was enough for me to leave the board the locals know about those truck. I've seen the Orange one in better days, just can't remember the details. After my Stude taken from under me by family,I lost interest in them.
Sadly the Orange Truck was still in Fresno last Saturday, looking very similar. One front wheel was nearby, I could not find the Other. I thank you for the lead, I will be going to Stockton this weekend, hopefully the 56s have what I need.
Bowtie til death but I still hate seeing all that old Ford stuff get parted and crushed. Any old American iron for that matter. Wasteful, especially out there in CA they're probably rust free or close to it.
Virtually intact, y block cars, od trans and extra parts in back of courier, 57 is a skyline, 9 inch rears still in
Thanks for the report. That kinda bums me out to see them there, but it's good to get the word out, especially if this is the kind of place that scraps cars after a certain amount of time. Likely someone's collection got sent to scrap after they died, would be my guess.
Every time I go to the pick-a-part here there's at least 1 or 2 cars collapsed over those wheel stands. That's why you have to sign the waiver before they let you in. The crackheads running the forklifts just dump them on the stands, wobbly or not. I use long cheater bars and break bolts loose from beside the car whenever possible, not under...
