Technical 12V Battery size???

Just thought I’d get a few people’s opinions on a 12V battery

What sort of CCA’s do people think is about right for starting a Flathead

Motor is rebored +0.40 with Edelbrock heads

 

I'd figure out what battery size your storage area can handle. Then get the battery with the most CCA that will fit in that space.

Batteries are sold by size, so you need to get that first.

Size of the battery doesn’t really matter as it’s going behind the seat.
I just wondered how many CCA people have with there batteries.

 

Going by yours it says 700CCA so reckon I’ll look for something around that

 

I have an Exide #24 in my car, CCA is around 650.

 

I believe squirrel has a 450 cca in his blown 427 plan II nova

 

For a flathead and a 12v starter, both in fair mechanical condition, a 500 to 600 CCA battery would probably be more than sufficient if the vehicle doesn't have a lot of additional electrical loads.

Start adding things like power seats and windows, air conditioning, rear window defogger, heated seats, auxiliary lighting, trailer wiring, banging stereo, toaster oven, etc., then you'll want a battery with something like 750 CCA.

Also all this ***umes keeping the engine in a good state of tune for quicker starting and making sure your charging system is up to snuff. And using a battery with a higher CCA rating than the vehicle's minimum requirements should prolong battery life.

 

I'm surprised he's not starting it with a capacitors.

 

You said behind the seat. I'll ***ume that means inside the p***enger compartment. If that's the case I'd stay away from and wet acid battery. 15 years ago I got introduced to the AGM battery's. I love them! You can get same CCA in about 1/2 or less the case size. They never corrode, Without a draw they never discharge while sitting long term (winter months) about the same cost as a wet batt. Check out the Odyssey Batt. web sight. You'll be surprised all the different case sizes. They come made for Ring Terminal cables. Using the old style Post is just a matter of putting them on and then you have both options. My oldest still in use is my First one at 15 years old. You can't beet that. I now own 7 of them. Doubt I'll ever buy another acid filled one. Cold weather don't seem to effect them at all.
