I have a generator that I picked up off of an ole' fella at a swap meet about a year ago. I asked a lot of people; here, Fordbarn and locally. No one seems to know what to do. After seeing Blown49 in his sharp Merc rolling down the road tonight, I've GOT to get this thing on the road. This is the older style generator that had the points that would open and close, depending on whether or not the generator is charging. Well, now, it only has 2 wires coming out of it. Is one the "A," one the "F," and then the ground is through the case? There are no studs on the case or end bell. Just the two wires coming out of the housing. Man, I'm desperate! Please see attached photos. If I need to take it apart for ya, I will! Also, I need to run the fan on the generator.
http://www.ytmag.com/articles/artint4.htm http://www.mikes-afordable.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=A10505D&Category_Code=1068 some older gens used a cut out relay, no regulator , under that little cup was relay, (coil little magnet point set, would snap open and closed) don't know how much yo uknow about these things.it is all basic really with a little reading, just figure out if you have a 3 brush and go from there, if you wire in a light bulb to have a little draw that is no problem tractors and cars had them first start out by pos or neg ground? that will make your options clear give this a read, dont know what the previous owner ran this on,or how he wired it, you need a few more things to hook it up and have it run properly, are you still positive ground? or ? what year engine or car many sites have the schematics you need, but at the least i would by a diode cutout, from mikes or other streetrod place and then run the wire to the amp guage and it will show the gen that it needs to charge or not, also wont backfeed and drain your battery to much to explain, with my typing skills. i put a link for your wiring to see if you can match it up, http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_drawings_electrical.htm
Looks like a 3-brush converted to 2-brush - should work if it's wired correctly! Yep - F & A. I'd guess the smaller of the two is the Field & the larger is the Armature....but you could pop the end plate off pretty easily to verify for sure.
do a search on the HAMB for 3 brush generator or 2 brush generator and you will get your answers from what you ahve to what you need to get it going, from the regulator to the rare fan you are going to need
