Been a long time since I worked on a car with a 12v "generator". The car arrived with dead 12v battery, charged it and re-installed it. With the car not running and key out a dim charge light can be seen. What is required to correct the situation?

    Thanks

  2. Probably a bad regulator with a set of sticky contacts.

Somewhere in my stash of stuff I have an old manual that shows filing those points with a point file when they stick. I remember learning to do it in high school auto shop class but could count the times I have actually done it in the past 58 years on one hand.

What Steve said the reverse current cut out stuck and the generator thinks it's a motor not good.

  6. Open the regulator box, and clean the contacts with some fine emery paper. Then hook it all up again. If it still sticks, but goes out when you give the box a thump with your hand, time for a replacement regulator.

Tap it with a crescent wrench

  8. That's too heavy handed... use a screw driver handle. It doesn't leave marks.... kind of the rubber hose of the toolbox!
