Is there any way to identify if a starter has been converted from 6v to 12v on the bench and not in the car.

I have a model A starter that's in really good condition and it looks like the pole screws have been undone at some stage. I want a 12v starter but don't want to strip this one to convert it if it's not necessary.

Resistance is too low to measure but can check wire gauge etc.

I can't test it as a starter at this stage.

I ran a 6v on my Flathead T-Bucket that was 12v. Works just fine. Just don't crank it continuously for too long.

6 volt starters will live a long life on 12 volts if you don't crank them too long and heat them up. I have been running my 6 volt starter in my CJ3A Jeep on 12 volts for 30 years with no problems.
