That's what I've always used too. Once you heat the sticker up a little, carefully use a razor blade to separate it and lift it off. These can be very fragile. Pratice on some old ones before trying it with the one you want to save.
Spray and Wash: Soak it for about 15 minutes and use a plastic body filler spreader (semi-sharp) or something like that. Dry it out , Use it.
