I have a 62-67 chevy small block I want to use a stock 60's starter in, which is the straight 153 tooth. (block only being straight those years) Question is I have a 168 Tooth flywheel lying around, will this work? bell housing is a 55-57 unit.

  2. no , a starter for a 153 tooth (straight across mounting bolts, for 12-3/4" flywheel ) will not work with a 168 tooth (14") flywheel

If the '55-'57 bell-housing hasn't been modified for the later starter that bolts to the block you can use the 168 tooth flywheel if you have a '55 to '57 starter that bolts to the bell-housing. The FOGGER

The 55-57 V8 bellhousing REQUIRES a 168 tooth flywheel ... for the correct starter to work.

The starter bolts to the bellhousing.
V8 Chevrolet manual shift pickups used this same starter/flywheel combination for many years ... later than 55 - 57.
