Got my tyres yesterday from Ben at antique tyres. Picked them up at Toowoomba swap. Wheels are still being painted but I will post some pics as soon as they are on. Thanks , John.
O.K stuffing around while I wait for the wheels and sort out rego I set the car with the tyres where I think it has to go. It means dropping the suspension 5 " front I should get with axle drop and reverse eye spring and 3" rear with spring mod and reverse eye. What do you think?.I'm happy there.Sorry about the***** pics , battery is flat so flash wouldn't work.
Check the load ratings on the front sizes you're considering. I had the 4.50s on my '34 truck and they wore very fast; I replaced them with 5.50s and discovered that the load rating was almost twice as high. I did run the 4.50s on my T and they were fine, but it was a very light car. Both cars had 7.00-16s on the rear.
I run 6.00 on my 16" wide fives front wheels, but want to go 4.50. to drop it even more but would the load be too heavy: Anyone with similar car/weight/wheels?
Your 6.00 tires are 27.91" diameter and suitable for 1400lbs and the 4.50's are 26.20" diameter and suitable for 660lbs. You wont even gain a 1" drop with the tire change.
I Thanks Swifty but maybe I miss out on something here: 27.91" minus 26,20" is 1,71" ?? Anyway, the 6.00 I think look too big in front of the small model A so Ill swap them for 4.50 or 5.50 either way since my 6.00 are old and worn Universals and have to go Probably 5.25-5.50 since the rating on 450s are as low as 660 lbs. each. Might be a bit on the low side. Have to weigh in the front first though.
The load rating for the 450s is certainly sufficient to keep your car off the ground, but it leaves very little safety margin. The 550s give much more margin and the appearance is not dramatically different.
500/525 have a load rating of 1070lbs at 32psi and a dia of 26.50" and 550's have a rating of only 840lbs at 32psi and dia of 27.36" which would be close to the dia of your current 600's especially if they have worn tread. Hope this helps and all info is for Firestone tires. I had 450's fitted on my front KH wires (750's on the back) but when I got them home and had a good look then considered that they had to support a Dodge Poly which is not much lighter than a hemi I took them back and swapped them for the 500/525's just for that added safety margin.
I am running Coker WWW 7.50X16's on the back and Shinko MT90 Motorcycle tires on the front (5.10) they have a higher load rating than the Coker car tires, and they have the correct looking tread on them. They are for vintage 50's bikes and have a Car tread on them, and wider than most white walls available. They also had black walls available, rides great, unfortunately the front's are not Radials like the rears. But they mounted up fine, the fronts were a bit tricky since I didn't want to mess up my fresh powder coat on them. So I didn't mount them on my machine, gave em to a buddy who does bike work and he got me tubes and mounted em for $30.00
I believe they are 827lb load rating just fine for a Model A. They are only H rated (130mph) though, which may or may not be enough. The roads areound SW MN are***** so I will probably never go more than 100 if that.
Ok. Thanks guys. 500/525 it is then. I run 15" / 8.20s in the rear on wide wide fives Hope I didnt steal the tread. Its related
I'm running 7.50 in the rear and 5.50 up front on 16's. I have 1.5 inch spacers in the rear with an s10'rear end to help fill the fenders in for a fuller look in the rear.
That's very helpful information, and if I knew it I guess I'd forgotten. The 500/525s seem to be the obvious choice for visual size and adequate safety margin. I suspect that those are the size I put on my truck rather than the 550s.
On my 29 full federed roadster I had 16x550's up front and 16x670's in the rear on 16x4 inch Kelsey Hayes wheels. Wish I would of went with 16x700's in the rear.
