I just bought a Model A which came rolling on '33-'34 Ford 17" wire wheels, plus a spare. I've been looking for tires and am floored at the prices I've seen so far. A set of the Excelsior tires from Coker in 5.00 - 17 and 7.00 - 17 sizes would cost about $1600 - $1800 for a set of 4! Coker does show a less expensive 17" bias-ply tire but they don't come in "big n little" sizes. Anyone know of another source? My searching has turned up almost nothing else. Perhaps my best bet would be to (hopefully) sell the 17's to a restorer or a speedster builder, since they appear to be in really nice condition, and maybe go to 16" wires if I decide to stay on the wire wheel path......providing I can find a set of 4 or 5. Not as many 17" early Ford wheels around these days getting regular tire changes, as compared to, say, Toyota Camry's (and whatever wheel size they are.) Hence the cost.
I’ve got a set of bent spoke wires in 17” for an early Ford. I’m eager to see what you guys can recommend. I’m thinking they’ll go on a highboy, so some tall and skinnies with a nice rubber rake, please.
