Just spent 10 days helping friends build this beast http://www.pekingparisraid.co.uk/ curtiss OX5 V8 aircraft engine in a 1907 chain drive car
Ade, Cool stuff. Have you seen the Australian TV series called Peking to Paris from 2005? PM me if you'd like a copy of the series http://www.abc.net.au/tv/pekingtoparis/default.htm Imagine putting a car worth a million dollars through that.
I live for this stuff, love the radiator setup. I always had a softspot for long distance/endurance races or challenges, whatever you want to call it. Good luck.
I need more Pictures! (especially of the Brasier) very cool, double chan drive makes me feel all funny in special places. did i mention that I like Hisso V8's also? must have more, I am getting impatient dammmit.
sadly I am not going on the trip ,,, I just spent my holiday time helping my friends finish the car,, I did all the plumbing wiring throttle pedal and linkages plus a number of brackets and mounts,, they also have a hall scott powered austin of 10 litres if you want more aero engined cars check out my webshots pics there are a lot more in there and some detailed pics of the Mors curtiss
The last guys in 05 (who took the same cars as the original race) had interesting experiences in China and Russia. Parts? Inginuity rules! That was a good TV show by the way.
I will definately raid your pictures! any specs on the chain drive set up? are they using a trans axle or modifying a normal axle? as an aside, pre-WW1 race pics are always cheerfully accepted here on this side of the pond!
it's a modified rear axle,, the coupling between the engine and gearbox,, and the gearbox and rear axle is done by having a pair of sprockets one on engine and one on gearbox then a duplex chain over both sprockets this allows for some small missalighnment plus flex in the chassis also it's very short in length
have you read the book the race bugatti missed it's full of the most fantastic pics of the 1906 or 1907 paris madrid race i was given a copy of this and a few other items for my work on the mors car
??? Paris Madrid was 1903 "The race Bugatti Missed" is that the title? also, look into the book by TASO Mathieson "Grand Prix Racing 1906 to 1914" lots of great pictures.
it has a great set back, I was wondering how you over came the drive shaft question. I will be interested to hear about the longevity of the duplex chain set up. anf 8k miles is a good test. keep us updated with pics as you get the chance! thanks.
