This 1910 Velie was part of the same collection that Hemi Joel bought his 1933 Auburn Speedster. The car was called a 1909 but is actually a 1910. Bought by the Kelsey's family and it was part of the museum since the 1950s. Super, super original. Four cylinder, 333 CID. 40 HP, 115" wheelbase. Yes, it is now owned by good custodian! Who doesn't want a larger, early brass touring car?
Thanks! The timer (distributor) uses four separate coils and uses four spark plugs. The magneto is a dual magneto which can use as a distributor with battery or the magneto without the battery. It uses the other four sparkplugs. Basically, it has three different ignition systems.
I looked at that Velie at the auction. It is an amazing car! There was bunch of really great cars from the collection, I wish I could have dragged home about a dozen of them.
Yup. That was a great collection of original cars collected by the Kelsey family. They had been locked up since the museum closed around 1990. They "disappeared" until last year. There was also a great collection of mechanical large-sized music machines as well. They were sold before the cars. The Kelseys had started collecting cars for their collection/museum in the early 1950s. The museum started in Minnesota and moved to Missouri around the 1960s. Congrats on your Auburn. Probably the best original and the best correct example.
How many Aussies here can say they found a genuine barnfind vintage Velie ? Or any members actually ? 56 odd years ago i was riding my pushbike ( Aussie for bicycle ) down a small gravel road on the outskirts of Ringwood, Victoria, Australia, doing my hobby of car spotting. Camera allways with me. At 15 years old all you had to get around was a pushbike. Anyhow, i spot two big headlights in a otherwise dark shed in the backyard of a old weatherboard house. I knock on the door and the old bloke says it,s a 1925 Velie tourer ( phaeton ) does,nt run and not for sale. Probably worth $100 then . Quite a rare car in Australia . Never seen another Velie since. As i write this i suddenly remember "The Pushbike Song" by Melbourne band The Mixtures. Mungo Jerry did a good remake too. View attachment 6471913
