Just signed onto this thread, as a Chev 490 engine wandered into the shop and is just too cute not to build.

you my friend have an amazing gift, you have the vision to know what it will look like when done and the talent to do it!!!! Stay on the sunny side, life is like going on a long drive with some else driving, you go down a lot of roads you didn't wanna go on... I'm on the north side of 70 and still trying to take the wheel

I must’ve missed this thread. Looks like a great build.

  7. They are good engines with a bit of love, nice change from Ford Bangers.

G'day mate, sorry took so long to reply I haven't checked this thread in so long. Thank you I have been chipping away always trying to improve my skills. I do my best to stay covered up if I am out in the sun same thing when welding. I see you are in Murbah now would be great to catch up sometime. Do you still have the EK? @autobilly

So sorry missed your post, if you still have it I may need some odds and ends.

G'day @2FORCEFULL, sorry it took so long to reply thank you for the compliments on my work and for your encouragement appreciate it hope to be doing some work on this build soon been mainly working on the '27 T RPU build. I have been watching & enjoying your "MY ILL ADVISED "T' PROJECT"

G'day mate, sorry only getting and replying now. Hopefully I can start to resurrect this build, need to clean the surface rust first.

How the Chev project pretty much looks like now. Been trying to clean the shithole up, way too much shit laying around.

  8. Forgot to mention. I purchased a set of 8 Curtiss-Jenny OX-5 rods for the Chev Banger build. Only key piece left is the Ferro '25 block.

Do not know Curtis rods: can you explain bolt at pin end, hollow with hole in side also. Maybe lock pin in place but what else?

  10. Bit back story, Bob Rufi first used the OX-5 rods in his '25 engine, they are 1/4" (?) longer then Model A, perfect for raising compression in the Chev Banger as combustion chamber is at the top part of bore. Being aircraft they are near bulletproof, they have the same journal size as A & B rods. The lock screw is for locking in the Gudgeon Pin then safety wired to rod. The bearings are also riveted to rod to prevent spinning bearings.

  15. Thank you Pete! Happy to share what I learn, only way to keep this HOT ROD thing going

    Thank you very much

Thank you for checking in. To find these rods has taken me 20 years of trying and they weren't cheap. Super happy to have them though

I welded that with TIG, I will likely fabricate a new one, first time I have welded Stainless so mostly just a test piece, a good learning experience. I have since bought the powder to make paste so can do that or Purge.

Started this buck for a '25 T Turtledeck

I purchased a good solid pair of '25/'26 Chev doors that I can take patterns off. These will go on a body that will have the original woodwork replicated.

    Looks fantastic!
What kind of wood are you using for the buck? That little T deck looks bang on!

  20. Cheers Glenn! Gotta do something and can't think of anything better to do then work on these ol' relics, This keeps me going!

Cheers Tim! Took me a long time to move forward with this buck lots of procrastination from idea to start wanting to get it close, the wood used is "Structural Plywood" 15mm 5/8"-ish easy to cut and shape.

Looking forward to seeing you get to the structural wood part. Maybe I'll have more done on mine by then. Also hoping Grumpy Gabby 2 will share more of what he has accomplished. He has '25 & '26 roadsters and lots of parts & pictures. There needs to be a central place with all this early Chevy open car wood information.

  24. Thank you Steve!

I have the bulk of the original wood and have photos of missing pieces so will get to that when I have completed the steel structure on build 2. Build 3 is a quiet a while away but might at least build body, we'll see. Also I need to find a local source of Tasmanian Oak in right thickness and I need to fix my wood bandsaw, lots of projects not enough space! I need to make better use of time!

We've started using this wood called Accoya it's a hard pine from New Zealand, it's light and strong really nice to work with , it's mainly for outside decking. It's treated with vinegar , and is guaranteed to last 50 years!! It comes in 5/4 thick and it's 5.75 wide. I've used the dark gray to make some rolling pins on my lathe . Fun stuff :) . I like how the later "T"s have more of a tub to sit in there is more protection around you. a061e9a0-77dd-48de-a9a1-d73f5a851aac.jpg

I'll be watching. I'm all ready to go on the wood as soon as I make enough space. Getting moving is the problem.
