Just following your lead, and everyone else on here. I was gonna use the roof cap from a 34 chevy truck, but the curve was a little to sharp on the corners. So now I have a roof cap to try on another project, unless you need one.

A bunch of friends came by today. And of course it became a bench race session instead of actual work on any projects. :( Well I had some chrome smoothies laying ariound so we switched out the old wire wheels on the 27 chevy for the smoothies. The actual wheels for this car will be black smoothies with rings, caps, and big and little tires. The wires just weren't doing it for me.

  3. Hmmmm. How's the visor area on said top?
The chromies look good, btw. The black steelies with caps and rings will look best though. Good choice.

The wires didn't do it for me either...and I'm not sure the black smoothies, rings and caps will either. Wheels need to stand out...they simply make a car...and with your intended paint job of black fenders and green body...your wheels are going to get "lost" in the fenders...if anything, paint 'em a lighter shade of green...I have some Studey paint left...

Hmmmm green wheels! Now that sounds interesting.

I did a little roof structuring around the opening where the canvas would have been. For this I used 3/4 inch square tubing, which had to be bent in a double contour, I then clamped it down to the outside if the roof area, and then plasma cut the ruff edges from the top. I then clamped it to the underside of the remaining roof area and tacked it into place. In doing this it straightened out the sheetmetal from the model A, and gave me a solid foundation to finish out the steel roof, and interior structure.

I decided to mock up the fenders so I could do the final line up of the body, and start building the body mounts. I think I will have to play, the tire and wheel size game for the final look and ride height. But over all I like the look with the fenders.

I tend to over kill or over structure on most of my builds, and this one is no exception. I started on the body sub floor supports. The main supports front to back will follow or mimic the frame shape. I will drill through these at 6 locations, and bolt through them into the top of the frame with welded nuts, there will be a 2 inch by 1/4 inch strip of rubber, front to back that will devide and cushion the body from the frame. Since this is gonna be a delivery the rear floor has to be elevated, there is so much still to do.

I figured the best battery location was gonna be under the p***enger side seating area. It will have an interior hinged door, and a remote hookup for emergency disconnect, or jump starts heaven forbid,:( I used 3/4 inch angle for the battery box, then installed it in the car with more bracing for the box, and flooring. I also notched the terminal points in the angle iron for the battery connection.

I have a 27 4 door sedan that has been in my garage since 1953. It's my grandfather's chevy. Blue primary color with black running boards, fenders, and black leather top. All it needs is a radiator and a radiator shell which it came with the aluminum one like the one on your car but it is so brittle. No intentions of selling it so dont ask. After I finish my 55 chrysler new yorker deluxe 4 door (331 ci) that will be my next project.

    (Thanks guys)
WOW! Both projects are worthy. I like your chevy but I have enough toys at this time, so I wont make an offer on it. :) But the chrysler has my interest. Just kidding. Keep everyone informed on both cars...John

haha thanks I am in the process of looking for a house so once i figure out that situation i can start working on them avidly. i am planning to bring the 55 to my shop and staying late 3 days a week working on it. but the GF may not understand it lol. so I am trying to get her involved lol. i plan to keep both relatively stock. the 27 i will be keeping stock. the 55 all i plan to do is add an ipod hook up, french the antenna, add fender skirts, and add air bags. thats pretty much it. I will keep you updated. although it may be a while until i can put some time into it.

I started to lay out some of the floor pan. In doing so I thought I might as well seal up the bottom, or side panels of the car from moisture in the process, and also get rid of some of the road dirt catch all areas that these cars have. I also might put a small storage area under the rear delivery deck, that would also serve as a mini belly pan. Hmmm maybe.

Well I decided the rear cargo storage might not be a bad idea. so I fabricated the flooring and side panels to make it so. And tacked it all in place. There will be a hinged cover over this area. I then installed the roof bows using 3/4 inch square tubing bent into a light curve this will support the new sheet steel top. I then decided to mock up the factory visor for fit and I decided I like it, and will use it.

Thanks. I bought a thermal dynamics #39 plasma cutter awhile back and it has cut (no pun intended) some of my build time down regarding sheetmetal, to a 4th of what it was before.

Anyway I finished up cutting and fitting all the flooring and installing the mastercylinder, and battery access door. I used some hardware store, nickel plated piano hinges for these. Just a little more done each day.
I am still gonna drive this one by late winter or early spring.

  20. Lookin' Great, John!! You're makin' a lot faster progress than I am on my '29 A P/U...and you're even takin' time out to do some fishin'!! I'm SUCH a slacker.:(;)
I'm bettin' you'll have it runnin' by early spring, and all shook down and ready for the next Gunnison Car Show in August, right?:D

I installed the 18 guage metal for the roof panel, it went down fairly easy, but I had to install a few extra roof braces to keep the shape I wanted. It does have a slight compound curve to it but it still fits the era of the car.

Yep; The steel bows you fabbed appear to have about the same curve the wood bows had. Keep on keepin' on John.:)

I decided to tackle the front of the roof cap. I looked around the shop for some usable donor metal and came upon a 33 chevy running board that had a neat reveal line on the lower edge, it had some rust through on the top, it was junk and not gonna be used anywhere else. So with a little cutting and tweaking it fit the shape I needed. After that some paper patterns for the corners, and a little more cutting and welding. And one more thing off my list.
Maybe the door latches for sunday?

Well didn't work on the car sunday :( and it is now tuesday evening. I have had a slow work week so far, so I used my time to get a couple of thing crossed off my list.

    1. door latches and interior handles. I used small bear claws cuz my original latches were non existant and I had these laying around, but I did use the original inside mechanisms with a little modifications and 1/2 inch steel square tubing, they work great. Gotta figure the outside handles next.

    2. window mechanism. I decided against power windows cuz I'm a cheap SOB and I have a lot of old mid 20s chevy window mechanisms laying around, so a little more tubing used to fabricate the mounting of them in the original location (without the wood), and they should work fine.

I'm not sure "cheap" is the correct word. Frugal maybe...but in true hot rodder fashion, building something out of nothing works the best for you...

    Lookin' good, John...

Oh, and forget about the outside door handles...just leave the windows down...

Thanks. I rescued this car from a guy that was gonna weld the fenders to the body, and do a down and dirty build with a rat disignation. WHEW:eek:

Thanks Rojer. I am still shooting for my set time of early spring for it to be on the road. so be on the lookout for me to cruize with ya.
Oh yeah with the windows down,

I won't bore ya with pictures, but I got the steering finished up on the 27 chevy and the 28 chevy this weekend. so both cars are rollers as of today. It's Sad I have to take them both apart for the finishing and clean up.
