Got the new tank installed. It's actually for a 32 chevy, but I have found that with a little massaging you can get most things to fit. We set the body down on the movable dolly so work can proceed on it. The first thing I wanted to fix was the height of the windshield it was to low and hung below the visor, and was out of line with the door window openings. I took about 2 1/2 inches out of the metal above, and moved the opening upward. It was nice enough for awhile to clean up the shop a bit.
While raising the windshield height, I decided I didn't care for the look of the visor. To me it looked like a chunk of steel just hanging out there. So I made a few patterns and modified the outside ends to my liking. Then yesterday a friend and I decided to install the belt lines below the windshield and around the back of the car. They were aluminum and needed a little coaxing to go back on but it worked out pretty well. The rear belt line I had to raise it up a bit to follow th cut line for the tail gate, but this old aluminum is nice to work with. Then we dug out and cleaned up the old rain gutters and put them back on, along with the mock up of the outside mirrors. Have a look.
Dang you got me thinking about the upcoming price of fuel and if this engine would be practical on a long cruise? I did find a problem with the grey 350 engine though. One of the valves stems has almost dug through the rocker, and in the process has destroyed the valve so a a tear down would be needed to check everything out I think I will save the 350 engine for a later build when the money is right. I do have a fresh 65 283 that runs real good, is ready at this time, and needs nothing. Oh well at least this way I can stay on track and don't have to throw any more money at it.
Switched out the engine AGAIN. With a little cleaning, and a freshcoat of chevrolet orange we stabbed the 283 that I bought awhile back. It is a fairly fresh build and I know it runs real hard. It was in an old 65 chevy show truck. I think it looks better in the black frame rails than the tunnel ram engine.
I hate body work! Probably cuz I am no good at it so I drag it out, but I did get enough body work finished to spray the body in a heavy coat of k36 primer. and with luck I can get it painted soon. All the doors are pretty straight so they will go a bit smoother.
That's going to be a bad ass car. My son gave me a body that looks like yours but it has a cowl vent in it. I was told that it was a 27 Chevy . Any ideas would be appreciated. Lee
Most of the late 20s to early 30s chevys had a crank up windshield with the crank mounted on the header panel. I think if you could post up a pic of the body there is someone on here that can figure it out. I know I would like to see it.
After my stay in the hospital, I decided life is to short and uncertain, so I decided to start the assembly of the 27 so I can have a car under my BUTT. And in the words of John Travolta in wild hogs. I just wanna ride man. I got the body mounted with the help of my friend Andy. Then we hung the doors and rear tail gate this was saturday, A little door alighnment was needed nothing goes smooth. Then on sunday we started the body work on the grille shell and I finished this up. I will start the wiring of the car next. Maybe some time this late summer or fall I am gonna go for a ride finally. I also got some seats given to me by primer 31 here on the HAMB. (Thanks Aaron) John
Sure is nice to have a friend like Andy around...eh...??? Don't over exert yourself John or get in too much of a hurry...you don't need another trip to the hospital...if I can help, just yell... Got the aprons on JJ's Model A painted Saturday...got one small run in one of them, but the paint matched well and she is a happy girl now...sorry, didn't shoot any pix... R-
I'll bet she's happy That model A and her go well together. Thanks for the offer to help. Friends are great. Dave, Sonny, Chuck and myself went over to my trailor storage and pulled all the 29 chevy 3 window body parts, and frame and put them in my international today. That way if someone needs to see them at least they are close for viewing. Your new table book is great. I felt like I was riding around downtown in your 64 chevy with ya. Thanks John
Glad to see you're feeling well enough to work on the Chevy. Hope all goes well and you get to take it for a ride by fall!
Thanks. I am still taking it fairly easy. I have a couple of those rolling stools that work great for getting around in the shop. gonna get the wiring harness out today and give it a go. More BUTT work. Wish me luck. John
Naw. I got the harness out and started sorting it out and that's about as far as I got with it. So not to waste any time I decided to clean and primer the drip rails and install them back on the car. I guess a little more done is a little more done. Wont get much done tomorrow cuz of a party at a friends, but there is always sunday. John
Thanks bowtie. Working on this old hot rod is prolly the best therapy there is, at least in my opinion.
It's been prettty hot out in she shop, but we are getting a little done. Mostly primering using dp 50 for the body, hood, and grille shell. I pulled the fenders. splash aprons out of storage, and they are in better shape than I remembered. This car had rotten wood runnig boards when I got it so I cut some 16 guage replacements and a friend did a double bend for me on the outside lip. Still looking for a nice pair of tail lights for this car.
Glas to know you're feeling better, John! I'll keep my eyes out for a set- taillights are tough... and expensive I like the shell insert- wonder what it would look like with a typical mesh in front of it?
The insert is originally stainless, but we decided stainless on this car wasn't what we were looking for so we already painted it black. Prolly run this way for awhile. like I said before I just wanna ride.
Which taillights you looking for? I have some 31-32 glass lens and the bezels, I do not have the buckets though.
I have one original 30 tail light complete, that I am thinking of putting on the rear door area this would give me a licence plate light and if I wire it right maybe a third brake light as well. I have a line on a couple of lights from a friend for mounting on the fenders but I haven't seen what they are yet. prolly some billet crap.
Thanks for the offer of tail lights , but I found a set that fit the build great, they came with 2 sets of glass lenses one with blue dots which I will prolly use. On another note I spent the week wiring up the 27 so I could fire the 283 this week end. The timing was 180 out , but with that corrected it lit right off and sounds real crisp. I also finished up the dash wiring everything works, I installed the tack on the collumn. If it keeps going this smooth I should be driving it with any luck late fall or early winter.
I mocked up the fendrs and running boards, they will have to come back of for some straightening but they fit pretty well and I like the look.
