Just watched ( again ) the silent movie "Wings", made in 1927. Starts off with a young man stripping down a Model T, making an open wheeled modified, with a pretty cool wedge-shaped grill shell, hood & cowl ( narrowed ), no other body . Sat on fuel tank. Dialog on bottom of screen ( silent, after all ), never mentions "type" of car ( no "Hot Rod", "Gow Job", etc ). Referred to as what they named it "Shooting Star". Movie is about WW1 pilots, and you gotta wonder how many vets were used in the filming, both aviators and foot soldiers. Obviously all vehicles used were only a few years old when movie was made, interesting to see a close up of a rear window of another T already rusting out. Vintage ( to us ) aircraft, motorcycles. All in all, worth watching. Clara Bow ( the "IT" girl ) is a real doll. Minor roll played by a new actor named Gary Cooper. Another actor ( unknown what part he plays) has what must be the absolute coolest name ever for an actor, "Gunboat Smith". Movie is available in both VHS & CD. Worth watching. It would be neat if someone can copy and link the few minutes of film in which the "T" is converted.
Also, for those of us who have had a child go off to war, it brings up that lump in the throat.
Thing that is neat about it, it is not a modern movie showing how things were in the old days, real or imagined....

A quick search for 'Wings 1927' on the UK eBay brought up two dodgy copies from VHS to DVD, an official Spanish release on DVD and two from China, again "official" releases! The VHS copies say that it is in the public domain, in which case I don't know why it appears Paramount pulled the plug on the YouTube link above.

I worked at the National Museum of the USAF for 25 years. In the collection, we had a Fokker D-7 that was built post-war in 1919. It differed from the WW1 aircraft in that it had a steel tubing fueselage rather than one made of wood. It was used in the movie "Wings" and is the only survivor from that movie. All the other aircraft were either junked, after production, or were destroyed while making the movie. The plane is fully restored, these days, and is painted as an actual WW1 fighter. I was glad to know that one is still around.

Her professor didn't tell her where to get the movies? That's a little goofy, isn't it? Or is the point that she is supposed to research it and figure out historical methods?

I would try Netflix first (no, seriously). Then try searching the Library of Congress. Then go with the dodgy site ... just pay by money order or something else that can't come back and burn you.

  9. It's funny that this movie is mentioned here. I need to find a copy. Supposedly, my father appears somewhere in the movie but I have never seen it. He would have been 21 at the time.

    On Wikipedia:
"The Plastic Age is currently available on DVD, through Image Entertainment, in a double-feature format, which includes the Louise Brooks film, The Show Off(1926). David Shepard preserved the film through his company, Film Preservation Associates. Composer Eric Beheim scored the music for The Plastic Age. Kino On Video released the film in August of 1999, as part of a 4 video set featuring Clara's work, which includes IT(1927); the set is still available in the VHS format as of March of 2012."

    ... And ...

"The restored and remastered version of Wings, presented in high-definition, was released on DVD and Blu-Ray on January 24, 2012, coinciding with the centennial anniversary of Paramount.[15]"

    No problem.

I might check out these films myself. I love silent movies! I got into them a few years ago. Since I got DVR, I often browse TCM's listings and record whatever looks interesting.

    Buster Keaton cracks me up.

They are A LOT better that all those "step up" crap type movies...
