I hauled this home today. I have not yet figured out what I want do to with it. I would like to play with all the old stuff and see what I can get working, and generally take things apart because I like taking things apart and playing with them. The engine is pretty much complete. There is some funkiness with the exhaust manifold, but a little research shows they went from one, to three, exhaust ports in 1928, so my guess is that it just has an earlier head, and someone blocked off the two (now) extra ports on the manifold. I can think of lots of possibilities, what do you think? Nala the dog seems interested in the critters that had been living in it.
If you haven't already, you might want to take a look at http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/1928-chevy-4cyl-motor.463465/ for information on the 28 Chev engine.
I just finished reading about your Chevy Two in the new Hot Rod,, and now you dragup another project. I'm having a hard time trying to keep up with you. So, when do we start this new build ?
i believe they went from one to two exhaust ports in 28. The Olds head that fits the Chevy has three ports. But the end two are quite outside of the normal head perimeter. If that makes sense. I can send pictures of a 28 head and an Olds head if you want. trucks may be different. I don't know. Well here are pictures of the header flange I made for the three port head. Find scrap piece big enough. Cut off everything that does not look like a header flange. Install.
Yes, it does. I found the casting number on the block, it's from 1928. And only one day different than the casting number on the transmission. Haven't got the head number yet, the rockers make it kind of hard to see the numbers. I did check the oil, looks good!
I picked up a 27 National a while back and the previous owner had the motor rebuilt with the 28 head. The post mentioned earlier is packed with good info. Sorry, only pic I have right now is a shot of the spare motor that came with it.
Looks like the good start to a fuel altered. Very cool. In time it will tell you what it wants to be.
The rest of it is long gone, no one knows what happened to it. The car had been sitting on the property for as long as anyone can remember. And the ranch has been there 4 generations. I pulled a spark plug, and looked in the hole, didn't see any rust. The transmission seems to be rusted up, it was uncovered for a long time, water would sneak down the shifter and into the top cover, I guess. The head looks like it has a 1928 date code, there's still a lot I need to learn about these things.
Oh Man, Cant wait to see what you do this time. Hey it would be cool just to see it run again and maybe just become a bare bones painted up yard driver if nothing else.
Build a Speedster! I used to have 28 Chevy. I still have a soft spot for them. When I moved back in 1978 I had to leave behind a whole spare 28 Chevy engine under my house. Probably sold off as junk by the people who bought the house.
I'll have to measure the rockers, they might be one to one, but I really didn't pay attention. I've been thinking about the speedster idea. Being a coupe body means it would take some work for the windshield, or I could just cobble something together in the traditional 1930s way. There's a lot of stuff that would have to get working for this to happen, I don't really have any confidence that I can get the drivetrain in this thing working. I can probably get the front suspension/brakes/steering going, but the rear stuff looks pretty rough. And I kinda don't want to spend a lot of money on it, although my mind could change about that.
