I was curious as to whether or not any of you fine gents or dollies for that matter may be familiar with the 28 essex 3 window coupe and what I should find as a fair price for it.I think we are pretty familiar with the 28 chevy, ford , buick even , but an Essex? It is just a body on a 38 chevy frame . No hatch on it for the rumble seat and no windshield frame. Also , no rust through and it has doors and the firewall . thanx for your help.swaZZie
I passed on a Essex coupe in the UP last year. It was $1800 and VERY solid with a complete working rumble seat. now that i think of it it probably was a good deal!
It was a good deal if all the body was there.Swazzie you can make that missing part if you can't find it. How is it price wise essex is a nice body style.
If you get it and wanna sell it, send it my way... It'd be really boss with a 7x 308 in it! That's one I'd like to have 28-34 Essex/Terraplane. Someday. Jay
The ESSEX frame from that era was the frame of choise for most sprint car builders in the 1930's,real nice rear kickups.
In the late twenties and early thirties, Essex was one of the most popular cars built, usually in the top five in production. Lots of neat features like piano hinge doors, suicide doors on two door cars. Unfortunately the styling was kind of box-like and many haven't survived, disproportionate to the number built. They are cool cars though, and I garee a 7-X from a newer Hudson would make a cool cruiser. I got a pic here somewhere of a 28 or 9 coupe done up highboy style. I sat in the thing and there's more legroom than a T or A. My cousin up north has two of them, both sedans, but they look like boxes, all square, sorta like a stretched TY fordor.
If it doesn't have a passenger door you will likely spend the rest of your life looking for one. I have access to what we think is a 27 Sedan, no passenger door. RAHSY
When I get home I'll post some pictures of my 27 Roadster, X coupe, I'd like to find another one. Their wider then a T. It all depends on how bad you want one. I've seen some as low as a few hundard dollars.
Boy did you find the right guy. I got an outstanding deal on my 28 essex, $107.50 on e-bay! Parts are actually a lot easier to come by than you might think. There are even people in the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane club making repo parts for Essex's! If you want anymore info on them check out the Hudson-Essex-Terraplane club (HET) site at www.hudsonclub.org or PM me.
Hey , Thanx fellas for all the replys.I had not ever seen one for sale and though that it looked sorta cool in that boxy sort of way ,like the 27 Fords . Alas it was not in such great shape and the guy bumped the price up to over 2000.00 semolians while we were discussing it. So I'll keep looking.THanx again though for the history lesson .This has been a huge help.swaZZie
