Just started working on this again. Bought it a few years ago then moved a year ago and it went to storage and just got back to working on it. Here is when I bought it. It ran and drove. It was pretty pieced together. It came with a folder and looks like it was built in the late 70's early 80's. It had a 7" pinto rear end and what looks like an early 64 mustang 289 and C4 installed. I started by pulling the motor and transmission because the transmissions was leaking really bad then the wiring was so bad I said screw it and really started to pull it apart.
Here is what I have done so far. 8.8 Explorer Rear End Put the Spare Tire back on New Gas Tank - old one was rusted and dented badly. Front Disc brakes New Wheels and Hub Caps 40' Ford Style Rebuilt Transmission Resealed and Dressed up Motor. Cut out gas tank in dash and replaced dash Replaced Steering Column/Setup Replaced Gauges Replaced Master Cylinder/Booster Replaced Steering Wheel with 40's Style Still lots to do. I am trying to get everything ****oned up and test the motor then rewire the whole car. Here are some more pictures.
looks really good. that was the rout I would have taken if I got more part ie everything else when I bought my 31 body.
Thanks everyone for the comments. Its been a fun build. I definitely seem to run into customization after customization. It definitely needs bigger back tires and I have been pricing out the drop but have been pretty good about not trying to do too much at once. I figured I will do those at the same time since I will need new front tires after the drop. I cringed to make it un-driveable when I tackled the dash, motor, transmission, steering, and wiring all at once. There was really no other way to do it though. I should be ordering a carburetor and lokar shifter this next week which is really the only thing I do not have to make it run again. It actually has a mustang shifter but its ugly and in the way of gas pedal so I really want to get rid of it. Chopping it would be cool but way out of my comfort zone. My goal is to have a car that looks timeless so even in 20 years it still just looks cool. I have it all built in my head.
Looks much better, but a dropped axle and the bigger rear tires would really be positive step. I understand that some of this can be pricey, so one thing at a time. Carry on.
Nice ride I like that a lot. Drop the front and give it a 3 to 4 inch haircut, it will be eternal cool.
Welcome to the H.A.M.B. I really like that car. Great job on the changes you've made. Full fendered sedans sitting low always catch my eye. Love the color with the black wheels. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Here are some pictures that came in the folder with the car. First ones are in 1977 and second one is in 1989.
So can you tell us what the new dash is? Looks really good. I've got a 28 tudor that needs a new dash. Thanks
Its a roadster dash. I welded some tabs on the top where the bolts go through for the upper dash and drilled some holes on the sides where they match up so it could go through them. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-Model-A-1928-1929-Roadster-Dash-1932-Style-/290973551205?hash=item43bf600a65:g:w9QAAOxyl5lSK5yA&vxp=mtr I guess they are making these now though. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ford-Model-...ash=item43c3e3ac07:g:3M0AAMXQ0pNRAsUI&vxp=mtr
First time it has ran after putting the motor back together. Radiator has a leak from me fixing the support bracket. I will be running that to a radiator shop tomorrow. https://vid.me/x3Uk
Finally finished up the wiring today. Everything seems to work but I still have a few bugs to workout. The horn doesn't work and the Tach doesn't work. Something is up with the temp gauge. Either my fan isn't turning on at the right temp or my sending unit for my temp gauge is wrong. Today was the first time I have drove the car in a few months
Well figured out most of the bugs. The horn issue was in the column to steering wheel contact. I replaced the temp gauge sending unit. Some how on the tach it got switched to 24V. I did get the shifter, carpet and new seats put in (built some mounting brackets). I will say putting adjustable seats has made a huge different in driving it. I wonder what original Tudor seats with mounts are worth?. I also built a new gas pedal. The other one just wasnt right. Next up is to make some new kick panels and get the rear seat reupholstered to match the fronts. Then start remaking the door panels for the front and back.
28Tudoraz, I love this car and what you are doing with it. I have some questions. Where did the seats come from? Are they original? From your comments it doesn't seem so. Also, how hard was it to cut out the gas tank? Did you remove it first then cut it? Did you brace the remainder before putting it back in? Thanks, Paul
Thanks....I do have the original seats but it would have cost more money to reupholster them and there were not adjustable and I am pretty tall. These seats are way more comfortable, I liked the way they look and came with slider brackets. The seats are Procar Low back seats from Summit. As fars as the tank I removed it to cut it out. I cleaned it first with soap and water, then ran exhaust from my car into it for about 30 minutes. This neutralizes the gas fumes. Then the skeptic in me also tried to light it on fire but it was good. I used a plasma cutter to cut out, and grinding wheel to clean it up. I dont see why you couldnt use a grinding wheel though. Here is a good article on it different methods. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/model-a-gas-tank-cutting.254624/
Thanks! I recently acquired a 30 A Tudor so I will be watching your thread for ideas and inspiration! Lol
