1928 banger sprint car restoration: This car was originally built in the late '20's. The ch***is is from a 1926 Overland 93. This ch***is has the reversed 1/2 elliptic springs at each corner. They run from the center of the frame outwards out to the axles. Wheels are 30x3-1/2 Budd quick change wire wheels that came on the Overland when new. The front and rear axles are Overland . The brakes are hand lever outside bands on the rear drums. The transmission is '28 Chev and the enclosed drive line was mated to the Overland enclosed drive shaft.

The frame was narrowed and lengthened. The power was provided by a 1928 Chevrolet 4 cylinder 2 port engine, magneto ignition and a Winfield down draft carburetor mounted on an aluminum intake manifold. Cooling is done with a Whippet radiator. Steering is a Franklin steering box converted to center mounting.

I made a new body as the original one was trashed and beyond repair. I also replaced the original full belly pans and front suspension cover. New hood and side panels are now fitted. I have driven the car it runs and drives quite well. From this point I will be taking care of some mechanical loose ends and then get into the body finish and paint. My goal is to bring it to the hill climb in Lincoln next June.

From a couple of quick runs the car really is quite fast and very quick steering.

Good work - like to see photos of what the car looked like when you found it.

To answer several questions, I had some as is photos but they are presently locked up in my old laptop. My 'puter guru is working on it.

Now for the big piston. Would you believe I have the other 3 and will be installing them in the banger?????,damn u guys r too smart for that b/s. The truth is it is out of a V-12 diesel generator motor that runs one of the Washington State Ferries. it's big and damn heavy but a real conversation piece. I had intended to use it as a mail box support but never got around to it.

Driving the banger for the 1st time was more fun that an adult should have with their clothes on;)

It's very light and quick, Have not tried to spin the tires, have not finished lacing my new wire wheels. Once the new wheels are installed then "Katie bar the door" just got see how quick it really is.going to hook up with the golden ear guys for a couple of exhibitions on dirt tracks later this summer.

I will check on the Winfield size, I honestly can not remember.
