1929 pontiac 3w coupe

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by davesville, Nov 5, 2007.

  1. Davesville,

I just finished talking with George about the windshield. There is no actual frame for the windshield. The glass had two straight channel pieces of metal that fit to each side and followed a bigger channel inside the windsheild posts. It also had a separate channel piece that glued to the top of the glass. This one had brackets that held onto the regulator mechanisms in the header board which you could crank to raise and lower the windshield approx. 2 inches (50.8 mm).

  2. Dave and George,

Take a look at the picture of the white 30 two door sedan I posted earlier. You can see clearly all the metal pieces that went around the top and windshield posts. Dave, in your picture these are missing, do you have them? Also, that 'bar' or channel in your picture is what I was describing as well as two shorter but similar pieces on each side of the glass is all there is to the windshield 'frame'.

  5. Hey, I'm back. I looked at that thread. Neat Build! A cool technique for body reinforcement.

I just stumbled across these pics from another forum that shows much of the wood structure replaced with steel on a 1930 Pontiac.
I needed this info and I know a few of you were also interested. This was a car built by Whodaman.

  8. Hey guys, I know I'm a little late but if anybody is still looking at this thread, here's the Pontiac radiator caps. Picture isn't great but starting on the left of the front row: 1926-first year for Pontiac, 1927-similar but slighly smaller and different base, 1928-new design and my favorite, 1929-largest diameter cap, 1930 first year for chrome and no copper face, 1931-exactly the same cap as '30.
All caps before 1930 were nickel and copper plated.

The two caps in the back row are both 1932. The eagle was modeled after the Oakland eagle of '31 and was used on 1932 Pontiacs equipped with the left over Oakland V8 engines. The copper indian in the circle cap was for 1932 Pontiacs with the straight six cylinder engine.

Cool. I would love to have one of the Chief-in-a-circle caps just mounted to a block of hardwood on my desk. That's one of my all-time favorite automobile trademarks.

Rick,Thanks for posting the pics of the caps.I didnt realize that there were that many different ones for those years.
Davesville,How are you doing with your Pointiac.Havent seen any more posts on the project.

  11. The windshield assembly is very similar to my 29 Chevy,in case parts are not available for the Pontiac. There are replacement parts available, for the Chevy windshield that would probably work. See www.20schevyparts.com/ ,they have windshield regulator rebuild parts.

  14. Holy smoke I always wondered what a hiboy Pontiac would look like. That's got me to thinking very seriously about one of my Pontiac projects. I love that! As always thanks James D for great work! And, thanks for leaving the visor in location ;)

  15. James D-I don't know if this is too little to work with but what would a 30 sedan hiboy look like?

  16. James D-here is better pics of a 2 door sedan. If it looks as cool as that coupe then I'm definitely gonna go hiboy with my 4 door.

What is the exact definition of a Hiboy.Does it mean unchanneled?Or unchopped.Humor me.I have heard this so many times and I am still a little confused...

  18. I always believed it meant that the body was still sitting on top of the frame, in other words un-channeled.

I´m not so sure how good these would look without the fenders in real life. The chassis doesn´t fit to the contours of the body very nicely (if at all!), as far as I can make out, like it does on a Deuce for example.

Did any of you guys watch the black '34 five window coupe that was just on ebay? It looked like a very good car.

  21. That's always been my understanding of a hiboy as well, sittin on top of frame. You're right JD, the original frame wouldn't work well for this type of build, would require 'something' different. I like the channeled rods too but the one fenderless photochop you did just hit it with me!

thanks jd the best photoshopper on the hamb (xmas present sending soon)its fun and creative throwing ideas around like this and gets people thinking outside the square .i have 3 model a fords (all in a state of disrepair)but i love em.soon after i purchased these pontiacs a friend (who is a chev man) said about time you switched to a gm product.i must admit i never thought of it this way all i saw was two beutiful old cars that needed my attention .i wonder if anyone has actually built a pontiac highboy coupe and if not would it be the first in the world.as i said earlier i am keeping mine a stocker with a few modern upgrades because thats what i like dave:)

  23. Best on the HAMB? Not even close (as the following lash-up will prove!)
Think you could get a Model A in the post box? :)

jd kinda like the tall stance of the car in this style.you wouldnt miss it if it passed you on the freeway.cant help thinkin how it would look chopped and channeled and sittin near the dirt.anyone else wants to chime in with there thoughts and ideas feel free(yes i could get a model a in the post box but it might have mattel or corgi written underneath):D

  25. This one still has me staying up late at night. The color combinations along with the tire/wheels-I love it! Only one thing I would do different is use the original big diameter headlites but dropped low like JD has them. Problem is I just can't rod my 30 coupe, too much sentimental value to me as a stocker. I'm gonna keep thinkin' on this one. JD, I've got this pic sitting on my desk!

  28. Oh! So now its all my fault!:D

Hey I´m glad you like it. It would be great to see someone build something I´d helped design.

I would have actually used the big headlights, it was just easier to steal the ones that came with the wheels.

  29. George,

What does the writing say on the dark colored clamp? I'm thinking this is some kind of helper spring added later. I don't think Oakland would have designed it to hit the bottom of the frame like that, would they?
