That's exactly how it was done, there were not a lot of fancy ties like we have now. The kid would need to dive it to school or work the next day! I personally have seen a few cars that were done in the 40s and 50s back when I was a kid in the late 60s and they had similar fixes for the same issue, necessity not beauty! Great job!
Nice work...That stance is spot on! I really like the work you did on th firewall and the exhaust/steering set up!
Yeah, they are not the prettiest things in the world but I am trying to stay close to what a young hot rodder in the 40's would have done. He probably would have welded them with coat hangers too!
I really wanted to keep the stocker but it just will not work with my engine placement. I am going to pick up some steel tomorrow so this weeked I can........ Or, you could do like I did and use a 36 Mercedes Benz firewall....fits right in, only had to trim the sides. The top arch fits the Model A cowl perfectly and its flat with provisions for the radiator support rods too. You could probally find one at your neighborhood MB wrecking yard.
Finished up the firewall today, wow 10 hours of my time for something I could have avoided by mounting the engine a little more forward. So how did you determine where to place the motor mounts...? I'm going to help my buddy build his AV8, but we can't figure out the placement without the body and radiator mounted.
Olskool, I just saw this thread for the first time today. You are doing an awesome job and it looks great, very olskool!! Anyway, I hae a question, you said in the quote above that you sold off the original chassis and then traded other parts for an original chassis. I dont understand why you sold your orig chassis when you knew you were gonna use one. Was it in bad shape or something? Just curious I guess. Good job on the build and thanks for posting your progress. Paul
I like where this is going, great job on the firewall.Had to subscribe! I am usually a fan of the chopped top but in this case i think it will look good uncut since you are going for the young rodder build. Either way cool car.
I figured I could get more for a full, running and driving chassis than trying to sell it off bits at a time. All I needed from it was the bare frame and nothing else so I thought it would be easier and better on the wallet to start with a different frame. Thanks for the compliments.
hey Olskool34,just came up on your build,WOW! Am getting off my behind and hunting down a frame....and get started...One problem that i need to figure out first is,i am 6'4",will i fit in the car?Anyway, keep up the great work,i am subscribed...
Banditomerc, you are about 4-5 inches taller than me. I sit in the car just great. I really wanted to chop this car but with the lebaron bonney interior we have, it would make all the panels we have for the interior not fit and my dad wants to keep it stock for now. My buddy is 6'4 and he fits but just fits (he actually told me the reason he hates early 30's cars is because he has no head room. If you chop it, you have to lower the stock seat if you want to not be cramped.
Small update, the gas tank and taillights showed up today. I am using a air tank from a WWII bomber, seemed appropriate for the build since we are trying to stay in the 40's. I wanted 37 taillights because they are the closest lights that match the B-L-C's in my opinion. There is a thread going right now about black steelies and I have to admit, there is not much that compares to a factory black wheel with firestones and my favorite hubcap of all time, the 40 standard. This weekdend we are going to takle the subframe for the rear z and patch the wheelwells where they are thin. About 4 inches up on both sides. Then the body can come off for final bodywork.
Hey Mike, from looking around on here, I think they are around 10 gallons. We don't plan on taking this car on 4 hour drives so the capacity should be fine for around town crusing and the occasional longer trip.
So, I have been thinking about this long and hard. I just don't think I have the funds to do this car like I had originally thought. I am going to talk with my father over the weekend but I might be letting it go. I just got smacked in the face over asking a simple paint question and it got me to thinking. I really want to get started on my T and I just have no room for all these projects............................
You've come this far and are gonna quit now? Who ever said this has to be painted right away? Drive the fucker in primer for a few years. Enjoy your hard work.
Don't stop now. This is one of my favorites builds. It's also great inspiration for how I'd like my coupe to turn out. Plenty of cars have rustoleum paint jobs, come back to it after one of you're own projects are done. Sent from my DROID device using the TJJ mobile app
Thanks for the encouragement guys. My dad has been putting alot of pressure on me to get it done and truthfully it is making me want to just put it in a corner. He wants to be driving it by June and that is just not going to happen. He means well but somtimes he pushes too much. I just need to take a step back from it for awhile I think.
You think to much Just keep plugging away at it at your own pace, baby steps and all that. Don't just throw it in the corner, cuz the next thing you know it'll collect dust and you'll see it as a wasted investment and sell it off. Bad for you, good for another HAMBer.
I guess we could give you a long weekend off, but then we're gonna need you to get back to work on it...awesome build. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
