I'm looking for ideas on how to repair worn holes in the door hinges. I figure drilling them out and adding bushings is one way. Any other thoughts? Thanks
Just got thru doing a set for 34 ford. Went to local hardware store for bronze bushings, I can't remember exact O.D., I think 3/8" (.375). with 1/4" (.250) I.D. Drilled and reamed hinge on body to 3/8", or O.D. of new bushing, its the one that hinge pin pivots in. Pressed new bronze bushings in , and reamed 9/32 (.281), Im not sure about hinge pin size on model A hinges, but I bet it's the same. You probably won't have to do anything to hinge on door, if so do the same process, But make sure top hole of hinge is large enough on the hinge pin head size to allow for the spline of hinge pin.
I lined up and drilled the three holes per hinge, and used a long shank 1/4 or 5/16ths bolt, w/all thread cut off, after grinding the hex points off the head. It's been 38 years, so the actual size was just above the former pin diameter. Apply some white lube and it worked out fine.
Most of the Model A parts houses sell oversize hinge pins... Might be easier than adding bushings etc...
True... But unless you go with modern hinges, the repro hinges are cast bronze and you have to drill/countersink all the holes for mounting. And they don't fit that good.
True-and not cheap-I checked Mike's A-ford-able and they're like $70 each. Guess I'd try to fix the ones I have.
'34 Ford are a little bigger than Model A (.25 ). Did you have trouble drilling out the oval hole and keeping it on center? Thanks for all replys.
I did it in my milling machine, used a pin gage that best fit worn hole in hinge, centered pin with indicator, drilled hinge 1/64 under bushing o.d., then reamed, for bushing o.d. Pressed in bronze bushings them reamed to pin dia.
