Hi all, i know it has been done lots of times over the years, but! Can you guys tell me what exactly has to be done to make it look like as it should be?
Maybe there's a topic about it with tips tricks pics?

I'm new at building a hot rod.

The way I see it, if you're building a" hot rod ",you use whatever you can get your hands on,try it , and when YOU think it looks good (or right) it IS good ( and right). No reason a later radiator and grille shell can't work unless you run a hood.If it does cause problems , sell the hood and it will look even MORE like a hot rod. Main thing is to have fun and build YOUR car the way YOU want to. Some people even run '32 ford grille shells! If it's safe ( at least reasonably) and starts every time, a masterpiece will have been created.Remember, early "hot rods" were stripped down stock units with 4 cyl. motors. The term "hot rod " is defined as "a vehicle modified to increase performance". Good luck with your project- post the results for all to enjoy. Happy Holidays. Mike from Mass.

  4. The 30 shell and radiator are taller than the 28/29 and will be 2" to 3" taller than the cowl. HRP

Everything makes sence to me, hot rodding is a matter of taste and having fun, but i want to re use the hood back here police can be a real pain in the you know. Thought maybe someone had an easy guide just for help to keep it clean with hood.

    But... thanks for replying.

The way I mocked up mine was by spacing the radiator from my fan around one inch and at the same time laying the hood in the right spot on the cowl and radiator shell. Once it was all in its place then I had to drill out new holes on the front crossmember for the radiator tabs to be mounted. Then cut and rethreaded the radiator support rods.
This was a 30 coupe with a 32 shell so the height was not a problem.
Like already said you will need a shorter radiator and shell, so get the proper chopped rad and shell and do the same thing. Unless you wanna shorten or lengthen the hood, just mock up to the hoods original length

It can't be done, shouldn't be done, and if done wont look right. But just in case you still want to here is my 28/29 Tudor.:D [IMG] [IMG]

Haven't chopped anything yet. I'm still figuring out what's best to do. I'm trying to keep the body as original ad can be, but i like the 30 shell morw than the 29.

Nice build, i like it fenderless. To bad it's forbidden to drive it fenderless over here.

Thanks guys, for me it still looks a little to high, even with the mods done. A do want to keep the hood (top only) and if it runs a little backwards it look silly in my opinion.

Now a heard something about aftermarket 30's style shells with '29 dimensions. Is that on the market that anybody knows?

Just trim the sides up on your 30 shell until it fits the radiator. If you have to chop it so the bottom of the radiator tank doesn't show it will look fine. Can't be going up hill if it fits the 29 radiator.

    Thanks..

Still don't know what to do, maybe i'll keep the '29 shell and go for a nice looking stone guard for it.

  19. Well, I imagine if you use the 29 radiator and trim the bottom sides of the 31 shell, you will maintain your hood alignment.

My car's grill shell is about 2 inches lower than the cowl. Not up hill

    Man,

I have a decent '29 Shell I'll give you if you pay for shipping. The '29 needs a '29 shell. '30 is not so bueno in my very humble opinion. But if you wan this shell it's here for you.

    All the best,

    Tim

The hoods won't interchange. The 30-31 hood is narrower at the front, wider at the back, and different curvature at both ends compared to a 29. You would also have to widen the later grill to fit the earlier radiator. It sounds to me that you would be better off using a 28-29 shell. And then maybe add what you want to it.

  24. I know I'm being a dick, but Model "A"s have neither a grill nor a grill shell. They have radiator shells
Also, BBQs have grills, cars have grilles
    Anal terminology rant over;)

What's i name, we all know what we're talking about. Overhere (Netherlands) the only shell we got is the gasstation. We do have bbq grills. But a radiator shell is called radiateur-mantel. Would you have known what i was talking about if i asked something about a 1930 radiateur-mantel?

But... you have a point there. ;)
