Projects 1931 Ford Model A

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by DragonMotorSports, Feb 26, 2024.

  1. My model A Vicky hot rod had locks on both handles, and no interior locking mechanism.
I don't know if some items were aftermarket replacements.

I think you bought a fine Model A at a fair price for one recently completed and I’m sure some bugs worked out. I’m a fan of relatively stock appearance and the keeping of the stock bumpers. Good luck with it, I’m sure you will enjoy it.

A picture of the transport truck but no picture of the car? Come on!

    Glad you got the car.

  5. Very good point, how about a video instead?

  6. So I saw this in the pictures and figured once I got thr car it would make sense what it was, but guess what I still have no clue? Seems to be an original something?

  7. That holds the handle end of the choke rod. The other end is attached to the carb.

  11. Next mystery, it has a black aluminum plug in it but what would this hole in the running board be, there is just the one on driver side? IMG_2564.jpeg

I ran outta room for a tach years ago for this car -- but I found a mini-tach and placed it right up from the steering column in the windshield header. Nobody sees it and it's a lot easier to use than ducking down the column to see it there.

  13. So there is a 3” or so shelf behind the seat, in the future is that something I can remove in order to get a new bench seat that I can move back a few inches, currently it is a little tight in the leg room for me. I suspect it is like that for clearance for the handle for rear window?

The knob was answered, but keep in mind, that's original. Since this car has been modified, it must serve some new purpose. The vid shows an electric choke at 2:29 and the pic in post #100.
The plug on the driver's apron is something you are probably going to have to investigate. The spare would often mount in that general area, but the stock mount does not go there, and since this car has been fully rodded without a spare tire front fender, this wouldn't be even a mod. I looked at the pic video and didn't spot anything that explains it. The brake master is in this area.
Lots of people have cut down the package shelf for more room to move the seat back. I'd suggest learning the car a bit more before making changes. Also learn what each change affects. Since you know who built it, they may be a valuable resource for questions you can't figure out. I wouldn't pester them over every little thing while learning the car, though.
Also, I'd consider running tailpipes out the back so that pretty underside doesn't get filthy.

  16. So I guess a wiper listed for a 1931 Model A is not for all 31’s ?
This which I bought will not work on mine.

Anybody know what will work, my windshield tilts outward?

  17. Is an original vacuum activated one my only option?

  18. That's a standard accessory wiper, more often sold through boat supply stores, but also adapted to cars. I said adapted.;)

  19. No, but do a search here, wiper stuff gets discussed fairly often, for different models. Mighty wiper is one, Newport is the other one. Also, SPW is a cable drive design, if they work in an A (haven't used one in an A)

  20. That car looks great coming out of the car hauler, sounds good too.

  21. That wiper motor looks like it would work.
Put a nut and washer on thread.
    Stick thread through hole.
Put washer and nut on outside of thread.
    Yes??? NO?

  22. As much as I wish you were right there is no chance of the motor I purchased working. The opening and the slotted cut out going into the car is only suitable for the rod as shown in the video to turn the vacuum one on and off.

I would avoid vacuum wipers, there are many electric wipers that will work
    and
    great looking and sounding car
    congrats

  24. It seems that an electric motor would need to mount from the inside but I don’t see how that is possible on a windshield that pivots out?

  25. the motor is held by its stationary shaft with a nut on both the inside and outside of the windshield frame. shaft looks long enough to get motor to inside of header through the slot.

It's nice that someone's bought a car that is basically as described and hasn't turned out to be a pos! Refreshing change as it's all too often the bad way around.

Lots of discovery and fettling, particularly as its not a well proven car, but that's much of the fun of it. Clear that there'll be lots of questions, which is understandable, but just about everything is modified to fit / work, and the cat can be skinned in many ways, some better than others.

As regards the screen that 'tilts outwards', that's an opening screen, hinged at the top. The motor in hand fits above the screen. The articulation of the screen is accommodated by the wiper arm, which of course has to be the hinged type. The screen doesn't open that much so the angle change is fairly modest. 15 degrees?

  28. As an aside, every time I see an interior shot and the metal firewall, I just think of the heat that's going to transfer! Looks cool, but in effect, the opposite.

  29. The motor mounts on the inside and the shaft penetrates through the windshield assembly. The wiper arm pivots to follow the windshield as it's pivoted outward.

  30. Does anyone have a picture of their car with the motor mounted with window tilted out, I'm just struggling to visualize what everyone is describing?
