Hot Rods 1931 vs 1947 axles

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by daylatedollarshort, Aug 24, 2023.

  1. So my limited research tells me these 2 axles have virtually the same dimensions, with the perch width being greater for the later axle. Since I have both of these in inventory, would it make sense- it does to me- to use the 47 axle under my 1931 A coupe with split wish bones. I would gain the hydraulic brakes. I have not heard that this is a common swap, so I must be missing something.

Inner tire rub, less turning radius comes to mind.

Take the 47 spindles and brakes and kingpins, and put them on the 31 axle. Easy peasy.

Do as Alchemy says, it’s been done that way forever. Plus if you used the 47 axle, in order to spring above the axle you’d have to get a spring custom made.
