Hot Rods 1932 3w glove box.

Hi!
Is there anybody that know what the square hole in the back? why is there a square hole?

and just so you know...the hole in the top center of the dash is for a cigar lighter

 

Is there any way to adjust the original catch, as our periodically pops open ?
We dont smoke , but can you still get the ashtray or does anyone have a picture of one?
