Hi, i tried a 35-38 Ford cross steer box in my `32 frame. The column shaft is too short if i place the box where it belongs. Are 42-48 boxes longer? If so by how much? I have another box with column shift but don't know if its just a `40 Ford. I will use it without a U-joint. Regards Michael
Why cant you extend the column shaft with an extended steering shaft to meet the box you have? Good U-joints are safe.
Yes i can, but i rather have the "proper" box. There is no need for a u-joint in my setup. If you can find the Ken Gross Article would be great! TIA Michael
I also have a 47 ford pickup steering box and column in my A coupe. Tight fit but I wanted to keep it pre 50s.
I used the whole '37 frontend (A frame) and I had to go with a joint. Also the drag link going across to the right spindle was too long. Shortening is eady, finding someone with the right die to re-thread is tough. Only regret is I lost the original horn wire with the joint, but the gearbox and wheel position came first IMO. For the record I have a '49 pickup unit and worked to position it for some time, the push-pull steering required the aftermarket hoop be bent offset, interfeared with the lever shock linkage and generally looked "hokey". Cross steers like a dream, doubt the support bearing is needed but easy to do and I wanted it right. Later built headers around it, the most fun project on it.
