A question for the 32 ford experts. I've seen grill inserts that are claimed to be original that have two different looks. A- looks to be a metal surround behind the stainless that the bars go into (pic 1) B- with the stainless notched for vertical bars (pic 2&3) Did Ford make two different insert styles?
This would be an excellent for the V8 forum on fordbarn.com. The technical director for the 1932 Fords from the Early Ford V8 Club posts there under a screen name. Charlie Stephens
Yes at least two different styles of inserts. I'd have to dig out the Rehor books to be sure, but I do remember two. The steel-backed kind like in pic 1, and the kind with more stainless showing sorta like pic 2. Your second pic seems to show very shiny bars. Are they stainless? If so, that's not original Ford stuff. I think the version like #2 is easier to make, so the repro guys did that style.
If you are obsessed with the thousands of tiny variations in deuce parts...you REALLY should spring for the 2-volume 1932 book from the V8 club. The detail is amazing. Expensive, but more of an investment than a cost. It also has reprints of some '32 literature that has become nearly impossible to find in original. More for those interested in the history of the '32 grill: Go to Google Advanced Patent: http://www.google.com/advanced_patent_search Look up patents 1888719 and 1955470, open the PDF's. 1840881 will take you back to '31, as Model A shells started getting more complex...but nothing like '32.
Great, this is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks! gwhite Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
There were at least 3 variations, and as I understand, the grille with the stainless fitted trim piece that does not separate the grille bars is a late version. Some differences are very slight, for example the way the bars are fastened to the crank hole in back. Jack
I will echo the Bruce the Librarians thoughts, anyone that loves '32 Fords should own the 2 volume set of books from the V8 club of America. They are well worth the money. HRP
