BALLWIN, MO (KTVI) – A Ballwin family is picking up the pieces after a fire destroys three vintage cars. The cars were in a detached garage that went up in flames. It all happened at a home on Rauscher Drive not far from Manchester Road.
Firefighters received the call around 8:00pm Wednesday night. When they arrived, flames were already shooting out of the garage and it could not be saved. The garage and the cars inside it are a complete loss. Mary Hanson says her husband was distraught when he saw the fire and the extensive damage that the flames left behind.
The cars in the garage were his love.
There were two 1966 Mustangs inside a convertible and a coupe. There was also a 1932 Ford pick-up that that Hanson`s husband was working on. Mary tells us she and her husband were going to give two of the cars to their kids but not now.
    Fortunately, no one was hurt.
Mary and her family are grateful for that.
The flames also damaged the fence of the family`s pool although firefighters prevented the flames from reaching the actual home.
A spokesperson for the Metro West Fire Protection District says the fire was accidental and was caused by a mechanical problem in the garage area.

  2. Every hot rodders nightmare..

  3. Hopefully the owner has the cars insured for enough to replace them.

After knowing a guy that went through a very similar fire I learned about builders insurance,,it is very inexpensive to insure a cur you are building. HRP

  4. Sad news indeed. Like HRP says, hope they were fully insured and glad no-one got hurt.

Outside of a death in the family I think a garage fire is about as devastating an event a hot rodder can face. It took me years to recover from the one I experienced. You never recover completely financially but you eventually come to the realization it could have been worse. If your fortunate that no one was hurt it helps to come to terms with it.

  8. Builders insurance?? Which insurance carrier would have that, the home or auto insurance?

Sad, but not tragic. Fortunately, no one died.

lots of discussions on here over the years about insurance. as with most things, no one answer fits all. but, best to do a search now and then to see exactly what your insurance covers for you. sometimes getting a quote from another company just to compare. as stated, insurance does not solve all of what is involved with a fire, or another loss. here on the West Coast, as you watch the news coverage of the many wild fires sometimes will see old cars that burned up.
