Where can I get later style tie-rod/drag-link ends for stock '32 front spindles? Im not familiar enough to know what Ford originally used in 1932. Thanks tc
I believe the stud/ball from the stock 32 rod end will come out of the spindle arm, leaving you with a tapered hole that a "later style tie-rod end" will fit. At least it does on the pitman arm and steering arm.......
Yep. Balls are taper fit like rod ends are, of course, and you'll need a puller to getemout. If they are still pretty much round, I'll buy them!
My spindles are bone stock,& are pretty cherry. There is a tapered hole in each arm end.(3) Where do I get the correct tapered tie rod/drag link ends? Also, did they use a kingpin bearing with shims?(I did a search) Thanks for the help,& theyre not for sale
Order up some 40-48 tie rod ends. Could probably get them from NAPA. I don't know about the kingpin bearing.
Will the taper be the same as the '32s? I'm wanting the kind of ends that have a zerk on them. They are threaded,& use a regular jam nut up against the drag link/tie rod.
37 and up tie rod ends will work. same taper. the shims are included with new kingpin sets because the thrust bearings are thinner than origionals and they keep the axle from setting on the spindle. you want the weight on the bearing as intended
And if NAPA dude can't find his way to the '48 stuff, same ends were used on 1/2 ton Fords through the 60's and mebbe into early 70's. I was just after the balls you're removing...I'm using the primitive ends...but sounds like yours are already gone. The ones on your spindles, I mean!
The early tie rod ends have the same taper as the later style tie rod ends so this is a simple swap, however doing this will require you to swap out the tie rod also. Most hot rod shops have tubular tie rods, so you can buy one or make your own if you have the correct size l/r taps. You can determine the length of the rod when the spindles are installed on the axle and they are pointing straight ahead. Measure center of tie rod steering arm hole to center of opposite tie rod steering arm hole and subtract 3". Tie rod ends are availble from most main line auto parts stores or just go to your local hot rod shop or antique parts place. They are about $11.00 ea. King pins (1932-34) are another problem, they have been made reproduction but may not be availble at this time. New old stock king pin sets have been listed on ebay and usually sell for $75-135.00 or you may have to start calling V-8 Ford parts vendors to see if they have any in stock. They are not something to get at the local auto parts store.
Thanks for all the tips & help.We are slowly trying to put this thing together( a copy),and we'll be making our own drag link & tie rod.I know for a fact that the drag link was square tubing. I'm still trying to figure out what my dad used at the back of the radius rods on this bitch. Thanks again, Troy http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v18/TroyCagle1/NS_SanGabe.jpg
Hi Troy, Dick has been telling me about the car, that's cool!! If you need a king pin bushing reamer, I have a tool you can use. Just tell Dick to call me or something. Later Steve.
