@AULIZ your reduction in diameter and clever altering of the bead position really made the best of the smaller lights...you certainly have a great handle on making things work and keeping it interesting. Great Outcome...I really like it...
Thank You Sir. It would be boring, if just build hot rods "bolt on style". I like to see how different elements are right size and right place (comparison). I see all cars ready in my mind, before I start to built car. It gives me very much in beginning and during building time. When car is ready, I do not get any extra "kicks", becuse I see same result what have plan. (55 chevy, Nova Stw, semitrailer, rods (grey 5w, olivegreen roadster, Mcculloch roadster, my project hot rod 32 5w coupe). Aulis
Saturday morning: Pass side cowl sheetmetal piece ready. Tomorrow need to weld it over. Hammers etc are needed, but its so much easier when have good english wheel (+ extra rubber on bigger wheel) and pullmax with shrink dies. Aulis
Glad to see your young un is interested........Teach em well when they are young they will later in life repay you................. grandson in 2001 in 2014 after his first run in the FED
Hello Sir. Nice pics !!! , thanks. I remember when I was Young boy and my Parents farmers. Parents, brother, neighbours were not interested in motorcycles, cars. I never got any help....They just work 7days a week like must do there. I was sports (athletics), they do not drive me to training. No tools and if I bought new handtool/s, if found those after few weeks from tractor.... Then I decided that I buy slowly all machines, handtools and try to learn little everything, so I can enjoy my cars, motorcycles. Begining I was built cars in garage where was many other american car owners too. I note, that tools disappear or not found when I need those.... Then I decided that I have own garage, own tools and not borrow those. Now its easier because I have time, I work homeoffice (dayjob) and can advice my son step by step. Aulis
I have been hurry last week with my dayjob (wholesale bearings and power transmission stuff to industry and dealers). Today I continue project. I made pass.side ready. Welded support washer under cowl, drilled holes, shorted lower stachions. 5w coupe cowl is so different than roadster.... Round is different, coupe cowl is more wide... Lets see what this rod looks like tomorrow when drv side is ready too. Aulis New Super Stock wheeliebars, window net+installation kit + header collector extensioners arrived from Summit racing. Middle of May I start to install those. All Drag Race competitions are cancel. I hope can drive some races August, September....
drv side lower stachion welded (chopped). I cut big slice top of cowl. Tomorrow morning I need to cut little more. After that need to make new over 1meter long curved and turned sheet metal. Roadster windshield frame is so different than 5w coupe cowl. dirrerent r. Only possibility is to drop middle area of cowl and slant windshield.... Aulis
Aulis, you are multi-talented. Your work and your thinking are fantastic. Keep doing what you are doing.
Thanks Sir. Saturday; I cut more made new part using beadroller machine, pullmax (shrink), stretcher and little english wheel too. Tomorrow morning need to Tig weld new part over. Aulis
Thanks. Summer is coming this side of The Ball. Not so much time to work with this project. Maybe 1-2week more, after that owner can pick up car. I continue after summe,r if he wants. 1935 ford pick up is waiting for outside (street rod) which need to "restore" (next winter). Drag race competitions are cancelled all over, so I have more time to work with hot rods. Own cabriolet is ready. Just fired engine on. Top of cowl is welded, garage cleaned. Yesterday I left very much junksteel to recycling. Today need to make equalizer for handbrake, because not found any original. Maybe start to make stands for those magnesium seats. Aulis
1st of May. I made handbrake parts: Cable equalizer and Rod. Cable equalizer I welded together using three piece. I made "curve" using beadroller machine and welded those sideplates. Rod I made using old rods and old adjust.ends. Just cut, weld and lathe right lenght rod needed. Aulis
Slowly,.... So much interesting doing outside.... Days are longer and longer this side of The Ball (like in Canada too...?). Aulis
Yes days here are getting longer so I stay up later but then get up later. Currently life's at half speed due to Covid 19 but we are winning here in BC!
You are correct. Good to hear that situation is going better there too. Here in Seinajoki , Finland COVID has closed restaurants, gym´s, library, swimminghall, all people hobbies. Oskar´s athletics hobby is cancelled, but quitar he is still play. They use once a week skybe connection when he has that quitarlesson in folk high school. Now we have fatbike cycle more and play old style hobbies home. Covid-19, Not so big effect to my life even I live middle of the city. I have worked 15years homeoffice (business with industry and dealers. Bearings, power transmission). I meet company owner or MD two or three times during year. Owner turned my head to come back from California (2005). I had few demand: a) I want fixed salary (I do not want to stress if it´s economical downtime and no business is not flow), b) I want work homeoffice. c) Owner not ask what I do during workingday (I built cars same time).... Owner, oldman, accept all and we have keep that same strategy. He knows I built cars during workingday, but many times I start working very early and work also evening or weekend, if have bigger inquiries etc etc. I like this arrangement. "password" is productivity. Doesn´t matter how much hours You do, if productivity is zero. I was note there in CA, that they have not so good productivity than we have here. They have longer days, they maybe work 6days week due to that area (LA) is so expensive to live.... I cook home etc. so not need those restaurants. I have continue normal living. even we have now COVID. Only bigger change is that I have been "hometeacher". Good thing is that he is only in 3rd grade (9y). Their english, mathematics, finnish language, natural history and sience + other subjects are rather simple. I have forgot all logarithms, derivative, algebra..... Oskar is going back school after next week. Finland we have only 220died Covid , God Bless. Aulis
You've got quite a treasure of spare bolts and widgets on your work bench. Amazing how discarded, salvaged and extra pieces come together when your fabricating something from scratch. Roadster is coming along real good. Eastern Washington where I live hasn't been hit as hard as Seattle by the Wuhan Flu, but it's coming. Maybe the summer sunshine will give us a reprieve. Stay safe.
It's good to know that Finland, like Canada and some other countries, got on COVID 19 as quickly as you did. Serious disease must be taken seriously and confronted head on if countries want to beat it down. Staying at home and social distancing are rather inconviences for most. I think of what people during the Great Depression and the two world wars had to endure in comparison that we have to deal with, and only for a month or two, and they're bitching about it. You are lucky to be able to work from home. My daughter is trying her best to provide educational opportunities for her students which is hard... Now back to your excellent craftsmanship which is very educational for us all!
Hello Sirs, Thanks. Oskar is study and I try to look over. Next monday they open Schools, it will be big thing for kids and their social life. This week I have fixed my camaro bumpers. Yesterday evening car painting company owner picked up those. He promised that I can pick up bumpers tomorrow. I bought last November 2010 camaro from Orange CA. I want to sell car. Easier to sell if buyer can just drive and enjoy... Normally companies are take big money if they remove bumpers, empty those, wash, sand, fix, sand, basecoat, sand, paintjob, install all.... I used 30-40euro material, 2days working, my friend wants 100-200euro paintjob wich include material.... Maybe tomorrow I continue this 32 project. Need to lift it up and install starter, alternator, heads, intake, linkake.... Those offy heads need longer headstuds, Merc crank pulley groove need to make more widht.... Aulis
Saturday 9.5.2020. I continue this 32 project. somebody has rebuilt engine, I just install rest of parts on short block. I can say that I like more to bore this kind of old engines. Cylinders not look good after their hone. I prefer adjustable lifters, SS pro flo valves and hot rod cam. Basic engine is 1953 merc. Not big job to change good "rock´n´roll" cam, lifters, quides, ss valves and maybe springs. Gives more hp & hot rod sound. THey have choosed to leave engine original style. I hope I can get carbs balanced with double progressive linkage.... First I lifed engine up and removed pulley. I made groove for classic V-belt (B) which is very near same with original Ford belt type. As You can see, merc engines have narrow v-belts (separated belts from crank to water pumps). Ford has wide belt --> one belt only. Next I made 5/8-18 threads both side deck and made those blugs. THose are now installed with loctite hydraulic liq. Headstuds are old ones. I have open all threads (block, studs, nuts). Offy heads need so long headstuds (lower lines) that I must made 10pc more. Those old studs and nuts are very good quality. I have new ones on stock, but outlook this car needs old stuff is possible to find.... Heads I was grind earlier two months ago. Aulis
I see that you are using the earlier style "59AB" heads on a "8BA" block. I also see that you blocked the water jacket opening between the front two studs on each cylinder bank. Is this the only modification needed in order to use early style heads on the later style block? How did you install the screw in the water jacket opening? Just tap the hole and epoxy the threads?
Yes, car owner was bought those old Offy heads to use with this´53 merc shortblock. I made threads to the block, cut 9/16" long threads from long 5/8UNF bolt. Just screw in with loctite 542 sealant. I bore one 1/4" hole more to the heads. One end of head. Aulis
10.5. sunday. Heads finally installed. Intake installed, studs fixed etc. Next: breather, generator, starter, distributor,...
