1932 Pickup Build

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Salt Flats Speed Shop, Mar 27, 2008.

  1. I dig it!! I love the low headlights and the 6x2's on the log manifolds complete the look.

The front rails are something I built here at the shop. I wanted to get away from a square tubing look.

So finally after almost a year of searching I got me a 32' pickup grill. Its super nice, and already had things done that I was going to do anyway. The lower inner pannel was removed which I like so that you can see through the grill into the frame behind. And the sides were cut for a channeled car which worked cause mine is channeled. Plus its has neat patina that I might leave.

I've been designing a front crossmember that the spring connects to. It will be designed like the rest of the frame with sleeved holes, and the spring will mount on top.

Sweet Truck ! Somewhat similar to the '33 I'm building. I'm wondering where you are going to locate the tie rod, in front of the axle ? My issue is figuring a way to set the grille shell between the axle and the tie rod. Thinking about bending a step in the tie rod. I'll be following along on your build. Nice Work csw

Very nice. I wish I had the talent. Looks like you have the talent and a fine eye for the right freaking look. Keep us all posted. We can't wait to see the finished (?) truck. I know in reallity that they are never finished.

I worked last Saturday on the front crossmember for the pickup. I wanted it to have the same feel as the I-Beam axle so I made the center out of 1/2" and rapped it with 1/4"x1 1/2 plate. (My poor attempt at making welds look pretty)

I still have to do some work on the crossmember, but at least for not the car is actually sitting on the spring for the first time.

Im starting on the 6x2 intake. Its to bad that they dont make any log intakes for these newer cadillac engines. What i'll do on the bottom section of the intake is bolt the two side pieces down and then weld the valley section to the sides. Then from there I will make the runners that connect to the logs.

"So I had a carb guru come down and check out my setup. The way the engine is designed with the intake holes evenly spaced apart from each other makes it hard to just run the center carbs and not lean the outer cylinders. I need to run the runners straight up and run all 6 carbs in unison. We will just mess with the jetting to get them all where they need to be."

I love the look of multiply carbs!

Just wanted to show you guys the start to my linkage. The arms are made out of br*** and it will have stainless joints and hardware. The two sides will be connected in the front of the engine, and will be turned by a br*** gear pulled by a cable.

I got the other runners attached to the logs.

Now I am trying to decide if I want to add some finns to the bottom plate to make it have o more of a cast appearance. My only concern is wither I can make it look like cast or if it will just look machined. What do you guys think? I'd like it to look like sellers cast valley pan.

Are you going to put cross-overs (equalizers) from one log to the other..I would try running the four outside carbs and progress the inner two. I don't think you'll have an issue with the center two cylinders running lean..
    My thinking..

maybe have a valley "inspection" pan.use a sellers pan that bolts on over your existing?problem adding fins would be the welding distortion(i'm guessing you'd know that judging by the quality of your other welds).you could mill slots into the pan, drill holes in the slots and plug weld from the underside.then you'd have to sand blast it with a real co**** grit also without creating distortion.what ever though the fins would really finish it off nicely.nice work on the build.

I will be running cross-overs but they will go in last. Both logs press in right now for mock up and then once I get everything else figured out I will add in the cross-overs cause once they are in place the logs cant come out.

I hadn't thought of only running the outside four. Ill check with my carb guru and see what he thinks. Thanks

I had thought of doing something like that with a bolt on piece, I just dont know if sellers hemi cover would fit well. Plus I don't think he is making anything anymore with him closing up buisness.

Another thought I had was to make some finns out of br*** and have them bolt to the plate. I am carrying the br*** theme througout the car so I think that might look cool. I just have to make sure that I have a good seal for va***e so I am leary of having bolts throug the underside of the plate.
