So, years ago I remember a chopped highboy Model A 30-31 coupe with the longer sedan doors on it.

Has anyone ever done the same thing with a 32? I know it would take a longer wheelbase chassis, but surely somebody has used Tudor sedan doors with a 5 window coupe rear half, to make a long-door 32 Coupe ?

Just curious if photographs exist of such a monster ?

Years ago there was an unfinished project on a trailer at Hershey that Posie had built or started. Looked like a combination of a Coupe or Vicky, somebody may have photos.

I built a really nice chopped 5 window a few years ago but sold it after a year cause these old bones just could;t get in and out easily. Much easier now in in my chopped sedan.

I've heard it having been done on a 5w by narrowing or blanking out the quarter window & retaining the original wheelbase, stranger things have been done.

It's just an interesting concept, that I figured would have been tried before? obviously it could look super weird and gangly, but I also think that if done well, it could look elegant like the same era of Lincoln. I have had 3 window coupes, 5 window coupes, and Tudor sedans and I like the Tudor sedan doors the best, but I like the trunk of a coupe. It would be interesting to see either way, a long door coupe with full fenders on an extended wheelbase (with big tall whitewalls..maybe even sidemounts !) and on a standard 106" wheelbase using sedan doors with the b pillar contoured to look more like the back of a 3 window door, and the 1/4 window eliminated. I might have to draw them out or do some cut and paste !

Narrowing it would make sorta like a Dodge or Plymouth coupe. I would like to see the Photoshop guys try it.

I have a big plan for a build doing pretty much exactly this, with a LOT of tweaks. I much prefer the body lines of a 5w, and I hate suicide doors. I’ve done a photoshop of it and man….it’s got a ton of potential.

  14. The "Green Grenade" Model A looked good with the sedan doors; but I can't even imagine messing up a deuce 5W. That's not something to mess with!

Yep…it really worked on the Green Grenade! Making the whole body taller kept it in proportion. That was even before Elmer was Equipped!

I thought the cellphone people could photoshop this image in no time at all. Maybe they aren't here, that is a good thing.

Don't think of it as messing up a 5 window,... think of it as saving a rough sedan using United Pacific parts !!

I used a well known concept artists renderings to piece it together...and I don't think he'd appreciate seeing his stuff ripped off.

But I'll say that it seems obvious that you'd need to reshape the back/top of the door. The hard corner doesn't work. And then there's the fact that the sedan door is pretty flat along the top, and it really needs to start arching down to the back to match the 5w roofline. And I think it needs to lean forward at the back above the beltline, and have a rounded corner like a 32. So then while you're at it reworking the roof...might as well get rid of the driprail and flair it out like a 3w too. So full custom door top and extensive roof work is in the cards. And if you're going to chop it (because why wouldn't you?) then it can all be made to be very cohesive. Another issue is that the rocker on a sedan doesn't follow the frame quite as tight as a coupe. The back corner at the fender is farther away from the frame, which can be seen in the shadows of the attached pictures. This means that pretty much everything from the beltline down is on a different plane than the coupe quarter panel...and so that has gotta be sorted.

I've bounced back and forth between starting with a tudor and grafting on a coupe roof and back half, or starting with a coupe and stretching the doors, maybe with the help of a pair of sedan doors...but making new skins would more than likely be a better route.

Sorry for the o/t wheels, best picture I could find as an example of the rocker difference.

Easy enough to modify a pair of straight on side view coupe & sedan photo's using the cut/paste & overlay method for the curious minds. That quarter window will be a bit tighter than say the Mopar coupes mentioned, however access/egress would be a big advantage with the wider doors.

All you guys who enjoy rescuing old tin and welding it back into a body should keep tabs on anyone who says they will attempt this project. As Anderson pointed out, it will quickly snowball into a project from hell, with no reward. A pile of hacked up sheetmetal will be for sale in a few years. Maybe you can turn it back into a five-window.

By the time the quarter window front radius is manipulated barely a sliver of a quarter window will remain without repositioning the back half of the roof, then it becomes interesting, ala Lincoln vibe.

And after all that, it looks like a Plymouth coupe with its skinny quarter windows.

  26. Don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating for the project/plan...but I wonder about moving the rear of the roof back to preserve the 1/4 windows?

The 1931-32 Chevrolet offered what was called a 5-passenger coupe, a tad bit coupe & more so a Vicky look with an abbreviated trunk, the Landau Phaeton likewise offered a folding top, truly unique body types competing with the Ford Victoria & 'B' 400.
