For those of you who appreciate the stockers - and without stockers in the first place there would have been no gassers - one more rare Aussie roadster. This one features the Australian designed and built WillyWilly aluminum head. As far as I am aware, this is the only aftermarket aluminum head which fits the early style 1926-1939 48 hp L134 engine.

oops - left one shot out - all genuine 1933-35 roadsters I have come across are rumble seat cars, and this one is, apart from the Willy Willy head, as correct as it gets....

There is a thread on Willys speed parts somewhere in the HAMB, I'll try to dig up a link and repost it here.

So was this WillyWilly head a factory or dealer option in Australia, then? If it's aftermarket, wouldn't that make the pictured roadster a hop up, albeit a mild one?

Bigcheese - yes indeed the WillyWilly head gives it a mild compression bump and improved combustion. Remember these early L134 engines are poured babbit and won't take much compression increase.

The head is a modern short run production unit, available both for the early L134 stud pattern and, in a different version, the later L134 engines. It's great to see something still available for the Willys - an engine which has been under appreciated and has plenty of potential.

A link for further information on the WillyWilly heads can be found here:

I appreciate the bone stock ones too...Ron Ladley is a good friend and I always enjoy seeing his originals...!

    Rocky:

I was wondering how long it would be before you found this thread (lol). Your cars are a real inspiration and tribute to the good ol' days. I hope your gasser series really takes off this year.

Cool picture of KS and the Hill Bros car. KS was bad ass, but usually came in second when running Pete Hill. These touring pros matched raced 3 to 5 times a week. Wow! Percentage wise though, Hill Bros usually beat KS. But hey, win or lose, this wasn't some fake, phony, staged deal, where a blowhard with too much money owned both cars and sponsored his own race for a pre-determined outcome. Gag... Just real racing with real competitors. Love it! Competition is what made it great. Neat picture of your dad's car Rocky. Was he involved in any of those touring pro match races? I can't seem to find his car in any of the old Drag news type papers. Please post those write ups also. Love the history, info, and the pics. Keep up the good work buddy!

I started this thread to give 33-36 Willys fans a place to post pics of their favorites. Not so someone could come on here and bad mouth others over some stupid personal issues. If you've got a problem with someone, then do it through a PM. And just to set the record straight, I have the old Drag News news papers, and I can guarantee you KS won the majority of his races against any other 33 Willys in the 67-68 seaons. He was the first to run in the 8's at an NHRA national event at the 67 Winternats when he ran an 8.95. He was also running deeper in the 8's than any other blown gasser at the time with exception to Ohio George's Mustang, or Mazmanian's "football" Austin. True, the Hill Bros were known for some record top end speeds, but it was the ET's that won the race.

Go to www.carnut.com and click on the picture index. They have a picture of almost anything ever built.

Yeah, I've been going there for years now........they don't have anything like what we see here though! Most of what's on there are old man car show pics.......and come to think of it, I don't recall seeing any vintage shots from the drags......a few vomit wagons....you know, modern tubbed out projectiles with wings; but that's about it! LOL!

Goddamn, Rocky!!! Boss Hydro, Flashback, just the baddest-ass gassers ever (ever?) !!!

You got my attention. My dad is cool, but c'mon, Joe was about the coolest dad ever. Breathing gas and nitro fumes is probably one of your earliest memories.:D

    Great stuff!!

Here is my favorite Willys, and the inspiration to build my car - the Barnes Brothers D/Gas coupe. This is an unrestored '60s era car that is still being raced today. The paint is actually the original pearl white paint job. The SBC engine has been replaced using the original Hilborn injection, etc. It still pulls the wheels on every gear change - just as I remember it as a young lad.

Does anyone have some pics of it?

Cool! LOL! I hadn't seen a couple of those shots before! A friend of mine makes the decals for Bob Chipper's coupe to go along with the stock roof '33 Willys coupe resin body I make......been trying to get him to make decals for a number of other Willys coupes as well; but it's slow going.

A few years ago, I bought the CD version of Drag News from Don Ewald. It's ok, but I was pretty disappointed in the quality of the scans. So some of the articles I'll post are hard to read. You should be able to make out most of it though. Here's some great blown gasser action from 1967. Maybe tomorrow night I'll post some from the Winter of 67/68, when most of the big name touring gasser guys made their way back to Cali.

  27. Weasel...where are you getting all the pictures of those beautiful stockers?
I have a number of pictures of them myself, but I still can't figure out how to post those pictures. Am also building a '36 sedan to go with my '39 coupe.
Any more sedan pictures out there? Keep those pictures coming...stockers and gassers. I have had the 37-42 style for many, many years (6 coupes over my life time), but when I started this '36 I couldn't believe how small it was inside...and it's a sedan, so I can move the seats back a bit. A coupe or a pickup would be like going from a Buick to a Smart car! In our area (Twin Cities) we have a couple of nose high early coupes, a couple of early pickups, and a sedan delivery under construction. We also have a guy locally with an Aussie Phaeton ('33 stocker). The rest of the local Willys are 37-42 style.
I'll keep working on posting the pictures...so far I've got them on Picasa.
Dang computers are just too much for an old drag racer!

    Rocky,
Thanks so much for posting all the pictures of your great cars. I don't have to tell you my feeling about the boss hydro. It was one of the high lights of my life to be able to warm it up at Manasses. That thing is just nasty.
